The exercise challenge

Sunday, February 03, 2013

I joined Spark in January 2007. I had been on more diets than I can count. When I joined it was with a new plan.....forget the dieting, I wanted....I needed....to learn healthy.

I can say that I have finally got my food to a place that it feels comfortable. The last 6 months of 2012 was very hard for me...I turned to food a great deal. What I learned however looking back is while I did gain weight and did make a few unhealthy choices...for the most part my choices were healthy and I gained far less weight than I have ever gained before while moving through a difficult time. When it comes to food choices, I feel I have actually learned healthy.

Exercise is where I struggle. I love to walk, hike and swim. I never have to push myself to do any of these activities and walking is something that I do daily. I would love to swim more but unfortunately that is something that is limited to the summer, as basically is hiking. However, putting a DVD in and doing an actual workout....well that is a push. I have succeeded in doing some sort of what I call "extra" workout (lifting weights, yoga, sculpt or cardio dvd) for a maximum of 3 months but I have yet to make it something that I do "willingly" on a regular basis. I always have to push myself....and I am finding that push very difficult these days.

I want to make it a habit, I know I need to make it a habit, and yet it is a constant battle. I am feeling that perhaps I need to look harder at finding things that I truly love to do so that I can let go of the battle and just enjoy.

The one thing that I am proud of is the fact that I haven't given up. I am still searching, I am still determined to live as healthy a life as I am able, and I am proud of all that I have learned so far. My weight might not be where I want it to be but I am a much healthier person than I was back in January 2007.

Everyone is different....and maybe that is why DVD's are not your thing. Try and keep exploring different ways to find the exercise that fits you best. emoticon

Really all the walking you do is great. And I know you throw in some ST too. The only thing I have added to my workouts is a "Sprint" factor and that is just taking the walk to a jog or the bike to a higher speed or jumping jacks . . . whatever. Just throw a couple of 3 min sprints into whatever you are doing. That will be enough exercise to keep you really healthy.

Will it be enough to get you to the weight you want - maybe not, that will still be about the food unfortunately. LOL

Something I have learned over myself this past year is that I need to get out of the house to do my exercise. Through a 3 month gym membership a few times over I learned that I found activities there which I enjoy. I booked my time into the day timer each day and kept my appointment with myself. It was difficult at first but now it's habit.

I always thought I wanted to get a treadmill and/or stationary bike at home but I know myself well enough that I need to be away from home to enjoy my exercise.

Just wanting to let you know that we each have to really evaluate what works for us and not necessarily what works for others.

You are obviously engaged in self evaluation from what you're writing in your blog. I feel thats an important part of the process to determine what works for us individually.

As I read on a Spark Pals site this morning: Try one more time....it's then that we find success. Keep trying and don't give up. You know what you want.

here is my tip for getting to love exercise.

do intense 10 minutes a day, there is a spark team for this. It is part of Sparkguy's philosophy.

try something different every day, the spark videoes are a good way to start. turn them on and follow along and prettty soon your 10 mnutes are done. You might even tell yourself in a month "WOW taht was easy, let's do two!"

I know you are not goign to give up, so I thought I woudl throw out an idea. Hope you find a journey that works for you!

So proud of you for not giving up. You like walking so try some of the walking DVD's. I have one I use that I love.
