OH NO! I'm over my calories!

Friday, January 04, 2013

Into day 3 of the reboot. And, yeah, I expect to go over my calorie count again today.

Oh well. C'est la vie.

I've done this enough (starting from near scratch) to know a few things now. And the first thing is this: I will probably go over quite often the first week. Maybe even the second week. And, really, it's not a big deal.

I've run into newbies in the past who are totally worried about staying within points or calories from Day 1. And I just can't get that worked up about it. My focus is typically this:

* Track everything I eat. No matter how disruptive I think it is. (Like that Lindt truffle I absentmindedly ate.) Focus on getting used to tracking (again). It's a difficult put important task. (In fact, when I stop tracking, I fail. Always.)

* If I'm tracking (which I am), I 'm aware of what I'm eating. And I'm making conscious decisions. Which is really why we track. It becomes about the tradeoffs. Why do I want that cupcake? Well, it's been a cruddy day and I want a treat. That cupcake is it. (And it was. And it was good. It was also a Cooking Light recipe, so while Double Chocolate Cupcake may sound really hefty, it wasn't).

Because, face it, we all know that "they" say to work out or find something non-food related to reward yourself. But sometimes food is the right reward. It just can't be always.

* Chances are, going over by 100-200 calories per day is FAR improved from anything in any non-tracking week. (Never mind the past few weeks during holiday season.) I'm eating far fewer calories than I was before. And as time goes on, I'll get used to staying within my plan. (In fact, there will be days where I'm not at all hungry, and won't even make the bottom of my range. It always happens.)

We're people. And we don't change overnight. Not typically. And not successfully, anyway.

I've restarted, and that's what matters.

And now ... I need to go make dinner. Let's see where my calories end up today.
