Shoes definitely make the runner...

Sunday, December 09, 2012

So I reached a personal best yesterday in the Ugly Sweater Run ( www.sparkpeople.com/mypa

) and decided that it's time to retire my old running shoes on a high note. I had noticed that the balls of my feet were getting sore and my lower back REALLY hurt after yesterday's run. So sadly, I retired my trusted New Balance 1540s.

I ended up at my local Fleet Feet shop, had my gait evaluated and realized that since I run 4 days and at least 20 miles a week, I really needed two pairs of running shoes, so that both pairs would last longer, so I walked out of there with a pair of Asics Gel Cumulus 14s (left) and a pair of Brooks Dyad 7s (right):

It was a shame that the Sauconys that I tried didn't have the extra support I felt I needed, because they were very cute, girly and pink...just like me. emoticon However, I always go for substance over style, so the Asics and the Brooks went home with me.

Tried the Asics this morning for my long run (7 miles) and felt incredible in them...finished the 7 miles in 66 minutes. Feels so good to run sub-10 minute miles on a more consistent basis!

Will be using the Brooks shoes on my run on Tuesday and will give my thoughts then.

Would love to hear how you fare in the Dyads. I've worn my Kayano 17s and am now looking at 19s but I will be open to my run expert when I go in for fitting. I found out that my 17s were a half size too big thanks to the weed who fitted me. Funny thing is I did 29 5Ks & 2 Halfs in them with only a couple of black toe medals to show for them. Wishing you the best in your new wheels!

Glad you chose substance over style. Your feet and legs will really appreciate it.
I also use two pair of shoes, one for my weekday shorter runs and one for my weekend longer runs.
    Congratulations on your new PR.

An improperly fitting shoe can cause a lot of trouble, as I learned the hard way this summer.

It's tough retiring an old pair of running shoes. But it sure feels good when you get the right new pair. I also use two pair and switch them every other run. I have a pair of New Balance 1080's and Brooks Ghost 5. I must say, the Brooks are holding out a LOT better than the New Balance, but they both feel good.

    Congrats on your personal best!!

The right shoes are sooo important. I'm about to give my old Asics to the Goodwill and purchase some more.

Super cool job on reaching your personal best.
