Do you like to write letters?

Saturday, December 08, 2012

I have been writing love letters this month. "NO!"
some of you might gasp. It's the eve of your 40th wedding anniversary and your old man, well maybe he started out looking like Percy Bysshe Shelley and now he looks a bit like Harry S. Truman, but he does not deserve you to do him like you do.

But here's the thing: back in the day when long-distance telephone calls cost money and there was no interwebs, we used to write letters.

So I am involved in the 12 days of love letter writing:
www.moreloveletters.com

I am also involved with:
www.girlslovemail.com
Girlslovemail involves writing letters to women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Both of these projects are anonymously freely given words of encouragement to those who need them. You may sign your first name but you don't include your address. You don't expect anything back.

What if you want something back?
Then you can sign up for
sendsomething.net

and maybe--just maybe--you'll get nifty things in the mail.
I hope that the USPS stays alive and well! I also send out holiday cards. I still love doing them with real cards, real stamps, and real addresses.

Lovely gestures. Thank you for sharing. Alas letter writing seems to be going the way of the USPS which is bankrupt or nearly so. Last year my sister resolved to send me a hand written letter a week in 2012. She made it six weeks I think which is two longer than the same resolve the year before. If I live long enough she might just do it! I do treasure a real letter moreover than an email somehow and a card with nothing more than a signed name seems both a waste of money AND a bit of a letdown.

You are doing a wonderful thing! Kudos!

Cool. Y'know, one of my closest friends and I used to write all the time. Not so much anymore, and it's my fault. Gotta start again.

I came across the box that I saved the letters hubby sent me when he was away for duty in the Navy. They are the best, and one of the few things I will save from a fire besides my animals.

    I wish I had a pen pal.

I had a long distance relationship with the foreign exchange student when I was in high school. Took 3 days for a letter to get to Europe.

I love letters. Have one friend who always writes letters to me (and christmas cards) - all the others use email and skype but you can't keep these in a box the way you can letters. And my 86 year old mother and I write to each other weekly (as well as phone but no email).
My daughter who is 17 gets regular letters from her granny which I am so happy with as she knows that excitement of finding somehting (not a bill or junk mail) in the post.

I miss letters. One seems to put more thought into choosing what to say and how to say it in a letter. Meaning gets lost in the speed of the today.

I am so glad you are keeping the letter writing spirit alive!

I have just done my overseas Christmas mail and wrote letters. My handwriting has deteriorated over the years but I still avoid even word processing for personal letters unless the receiver has poor eyesight. I like your links.

What a great thing to do. I'm afraid that in years to come there will be no actual written letters as history. Texts and Tweets are the written communication of the day.

I still have all the letters my mother wrote to my father during the 2nd World War. They are precious and are a piece of history.

Congrats on 40 years of marriage. We celebrated our 40th last January.
