Truly a Positive - The Proof is in the Tennis!!!

Saturday, November 17, 2012

After my April blog about my foot surgery, I felt it only fair to follow up with a "results" blog. Wow! Enduring the month-long recovery was SO worth it. If you haven't read my earlier blog, there were several reasons I had the bilateral foot surgery, including having to stop playing tennis (a sport I truly love) and trouble with properly fitting shoes, all resulting in great pain.

I can honestly say now - 7 months later - that my decision was a really good one. I played in TWO tennis leagues this year, one during the summer and one in fall. There were only 5 women in the league and I was the oldest player by 20-30 years! Despite my age, and that I had to quit playing tennis 2 years ago because of pain, I completed both leagues and was even a contender for the league championship.

I wore my hiking boots during a recent hiking trip in several areas of Colorado, as well as Arches National Park, in Moab, Utah, and for the first time in many years, my hiking boots didn't hurt me after hours of hiking each day!

In the end, my decisions were right on target and I'm very glad I had the surgery. I'm exercising in any way that I want to totally pain-free. I have one small piece of metal in the metatarsal of each big toe to keep the bone from splaying out into bunions again. I've experimented with walking lunges, planks, burpees (see Coach Nicole's Post-Thanksgiving 5-Exercise workout), tennis, jogging and several other things. No pain. My shoes are more comfortable than ever. I no longer despise shoe shopping.

Another well-thought-out healthy decision for me! I'm so glad I got this taken care of before I got any older. I'm definitely happy to no longer be dealing with foot pain. Everything my doctor told me would happen has happened. He also told me that within a year, the scars on the top of each big toe would look like a cat scratch. I'm still waiting to see and hoping that the liquid Vitamin E I used to minimize scarring also helps ...

I'm sure your feet are grateful for your decision. We can't do much without them.
Also, I appreciate reading your gratitude list in the thanksgiving community!

Thanks for sharing your story here. Sometimes it's so hard to make the decision to do what feels like going backwards -- stopping what we love to open up new wounds. But, as you have learned, it is exactly that kind of wisdom and vulnerability that can lead to tremendous rewards. I can see you out there hiking away and loving every moment of it.

Good for you! Thanks for leading the way!
