Seasonal Affective Disorder has again reared its ugly head...in spades! My motivation is dropping, I have problems waking up in the morning, and I'm carb loading like a...well, gee, what else carb loads besides a SADdie in the fall????
My problems with waking are the worst ever; even BF commented that in the 16 years we've been together, he's never known me to oversleep so many days. I'm waking up at 7:30, when the sun is up, which means if I jump into clothes without showering I MIGHT make it to work on time (ick). Getting to the point that it's time to look into the light based alarms, so I've been researching and so far the Phillips dawn similators seem the best. Anyone else out there using one? Any suggestions?

Is it just me? Are the rest of you OK?? (PLEASE be okay; it saddens me to think of my comrades dealing with this nastiness).

The good news? I refuse to give up the fight!! I'm still kicking and screaming, people, so don't count me out yet.

    I am having a real hard time getting up before 2 pm then tired all day going back to bed at 10 pm taking a few hours to fall asleep then having bad dreams too I hate cooking and went to Florida for 3 weeks had a great time back here and being sad this really sucks i take medications and vitamin d and still sad i wish spring was here emoticon

    Thanks for leaving the note and goodie on my page! I see you have this post here about SAD as well . . . proves that we are never alone. I hate that others have to share these struggles, but I love that we have camaraderie.

    I have a light box on order and I'm going to give it a shot because I don't want to go the medication route myself. The key is to have a plan and start it NOW.

    I agree with you Dawn, no drugs for me either. I've noticed SAD symptoms creeping up on me since the end of August (perhaps it was the anticipation of Fall). I've never used a light alarm but I do have a light box which I intend to use as soon as I get up in the morning (after DST ends) The thing which is really working for me to keep my spirits up is exercise (try to do it daily) and going to bed early enough to get at least 7 hours good uninterrupted sleep. Keep trying different things: camomille tea, melatonin, lavender sachets whatever works for you.

    I'm sorry that you're struggling so much already. Did you say that using a full spectrum lamp doesn't help either? That would really make it hard! I hope the light-based alarm helps with the wake up issues.

    I am having days like that too. I get up at 6am with my daughter to get her off to school. I should stay up, but after she goes off to school I go back to sleep. :-(
    It makes my day start off sluggish if I don't stay awake and see the moring light come up. My SAD seems to be more in the Spring though. I would think it would be worse in fall/winter since it gets darker earlier and colder. Maybe cuz I was born in spring. IDK, I'm no expert.

    I used one of those dawn awakeners for about 6 months and it didn't make any difference for me. If you get one, I hope it works for you. The only thing that improves my insomnia, problems waking in the AM, grumpy moods, depression, and eating way too many unhealthy carbs, is using my full spectrum light every day for about an hour without fail. Every time I begin to feel better and think that I can skip the light to save time.... all the symptoms come back.

    I haven't looked at the light based alarms but the right lights do help lots of people. Can you get some outside time at lunch? That may help a little!

    get outside more to get the sun, rake leaves, take a walk, sit in the sun and read a book, clean up a friends garden.... anything to get outside in the light more. emoticon

    I just bougth a HappyLight from Costco on Sunday for $49.99. I used it for the first time Monday morning. You are supposed to use it just a little at a time. I think I felt the effects of it pretty quickly. The strange part is that if you feel jittery you have to stop. emoticon . The funniest thing about this is that since I bought the light, it has been bright and sunny. I will blog more about it as the fall progresses.

    Thanks, Glinda, but I know about SAD; I'm in the midwest, and I CAN"T get enough good sunlight. Even sitting in a car or by a window, between September and around April or May. I have a light lamp, but it's really bad this year and nothing seems to be helping. Not going to take drugs; the side affects for me are worse than the

    Wanna know a quick and easy way to combat SAD? The reason why you have it is because you aren't getting enough UVA and UVB sun rays. All you need to do is sit near an open window or sit outside and expose your arms and face for 15 minutes. I'm guessing you live in a colder climate? I understand that it can get pretty cold. (I used to live in Michigan) but it's only for a few minutes. You can even get these rays when it is overcast or cloudy outside. No lie! emoticon

    UVA and UVB sun rays are crucial for the production of Vitamin D. They are also directly correlated with the production of Seratonin. It's a chemical that is responsible for and increased sense of well being.

    Give it a try. While your at it you can also get some fresh air. Breathe deep. That'll make you feel better also.

    I have a problem with this as well. It hasn't kicked in for me yet, since we are still having lots of sun which helps. Good luck.

    I'm only okay because I increased my antidepressant on the first day of Autumn. I wasn't taking any chances this year--last year, I slipped into such a bad depression with the change to standard time!

    Progress for me is learning from experience!
