Needing a vacation after I go on vacation....

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

It is great to be back in the US of A and I’m happy to be getting back to the grind. But why do I always feel like I need a vacation after I go on vacation?

Our family enjoyed a world class vacation overseas, cruising down the Danube River and exploring some wonderful places: Nuremburg, Regensburg, and Passau Germany, Melk and Vienna Austria and Budapest Hungary. It was just what I wanted: just a little taste (literally and figuratively!) of each of those places. Left me wanting for more, and maybe someday I’ll go back.

I must admit that I ate way too many sausage and potato dishes (after all we were in Germany and Austria for most of the time!) and enjoyed way too many pastries with my coffee. I learned that Gelato is not just an Italian thing...it is a European thing. When in Rome (so to speak...)

I showed a 1 lb. bump up on the scale upon return. (Maybe I should say half a Kilo...that sounds better....)

But not bad considering I ate just about whatever I wanted, but never too much of any one thing.

God bless European sensibilities about food and proper enjoyment of it.

At any rate never fear, I’m back to obsessing about calories and carbs like any proper American. I’m also so sore from my conditioning class that I wince every time I sit down, climb the stairs or move or breathe in general. I hit it really hard yesterday with 1 minute intervals of squats, presses, pushups, planks, rope work, lunges, burpees, kettlebells - rinse, wash, repeat - round and round for a full hour and 10 minute class. This after a week of really nothing more strenuous than morning yoga, walking and a couple of sessions on a stationary bike.

I was feeling pretty darn smug and pleased after I got done. Not so much now.

But back to needing a vacation after my vacation....

So much work to catch up on...

But I’m glad to be back and glad to add “catch up on all my Sparky friends” to the list and will try to be diligent with making time for that.

Be well and keep spreading the Spark. It does make a difference....

It is crazy about needing to recover from vacation, but I think that happens to a lot of us!
Sounds like a wonderful trip. I'll admit to a bit of envy even! Glad you were able to enjoy all aspects of being away.

Here's to working out the aches and getting back into the swing of things!

Sounds like you had a fantastic trip!

When ever I complain to my group instructor that her class made me sore, she tells me to work out more and do more cardio in between sessions. She says it helps with the lactic acid build up. Sort of like "hair of the dog" to avoid hangovers. I'm not entirely sure it works, but at least it helps me to get in extra cardio and workouts!

Welcome back Stateside! Sounds like you had a wonderful vacation and got right back into your groove! Interesting your comment "God bless European sensibilities about food and proper enjoyment of it." I once worked for a German gentleman who would invite us over to his home for Christmas. He and his wife prepared the food and it was like nothing I have experienced since. From the presentation, the portions, the timing, the taste, the drinks... I wish I knew more about their upbringing or culture that instilled such reverence for food. It was refreshing for this American who still can too easily take food for granted.

Welcome back! Sounds like a blast!

My best vacation ever was one that the whole family traveled one week. The next week, DH went to work, kids went to day care, I stayed home. Heaven!

Sounds like a wonderful vacation and I have to say, gaining just a pound while away and stressing about it is also wonderful! Hope you can catch up on your rest a little at a time this week while getting back into the groove of things. Way to work that body as soon as you got back! Wow!

Here's to a good rest of the week!
