I have always depended upon the kindness of strangers

So tonight I took advantage of getting out of work at 5 PM today to hit my first Gold's Gym Group Exercise class – Body Blast. I was pretty nervous as more and more people started gathering in the lounge area outside the room. What if I couldn't do it? What if I grossed people out by how sweaty I got? What if I made a total @$$ of myself? I mentioned to a woman sitting near me that I had recently joined and this was my first class. She told me I would like the instructor, Dianne, she's really good. She also told me to grab a bench/step first to make a spot for myself. She also told me I'd need dumbbells, resistance bands (figure 8 and regular, green are the easiest, best to start with), a barbell and a mat.

So when the doors opened at 5:45, I felt prepared and ready. I got all my gear and staked out a spot near the back. In hindsight, I maybe should have gone with lighter weights for my first time out. And I'll know next time to put myself in front of a mirror so I can see how I'm doing the moves better. I felt like I did pretty well at the end of the hour. My arms felt like Jell-O and my legs were a bit wobbly, always a sign of a good workout. There were only a couple times I couldn't complete all the reps and had to take a short break. The resistance bands are tricky, I've not used those before, so it's hard to figure out how to hold them. And I was a little afraid of losing my grip and hitting myself (or another person in class) with the darn things.

All in all, it was a great first experience, and I'm grateful to the woman I met, Kelly, for reassuring me and helping me. She said someone helped her out when she started. I'm glad she paid it forward. I'm planning on checking out Zumba this weekend, which I'm not nervous at all about. I already do a lot of dance DVD workouts, Latin, Bellydance, etc.

Happy 4th of July tomorrow SparkFriends! I'm headed to HersheyPark first thing to ride the newest roller coaster. If I can move after the workout tonight....

That's so awesome :D It's great to know there are still nice folks out there. Also - glad that you had an awesome jello-arm inducing first day ;3

I've been going back and forth on joining a gym since I've hit this gosh darned plateau. We have a small gym in my building, so I don't really want to pony up the money, but I would love to get some classes in. Your class sounds great! This entry is really pushing me towards at least trying it out.

Awesome job on the class and Way to Go for Kelly for helping you out. I think what comes around goes around so it is always a good policy to help out when you can.
