Another Bucket List Item....but I'm motivated on this one!

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

The other day I was doing some research for my husband and a friend for a hike they want to do with the sons. They want to hike, camp and hike some more....all the very rustic kind of hiking/camping. Now, remember, my hubby & the oldest son went off to New Mexico last year to do this on BSA property. I was kinda jealous then.

WELL..... as I researched the trail they want to hike I got inspired!! The trail is The Finger Lakes Trail that runs roughly from Allegany State Park (NY/PA boarder) to the Catskills. The main trail consists of 558 miles of trail. The trail is privately maintained (i.e. no tax dollars!). There are another 400 miles of branch, loop & spur trails.

So this is my goal..... I'd like to hike AT LEAST the 558 miles of the main trail. Folks that accomplish that are called "End to Enders." You don't have to do it all at one shot to hold the title.

Obviously this is not a goal that you just jump on a plane/train/automobile and just DO. You have to prepare. So my plan is to get prepared this summer (not to mention that this summer is already packed full) and start it next year (although, if I have a chance to do part of the trail before then I won't turn it down!!!). From reading about the trail there are sections that are easy and there are others that are difficult....I want to be prepared for it all!!!

I'm lucky because I have John, who's trained for something like this, and can help me. My dream is to do this with him by my side. If the kids join in, great! If not, I'm okay with that too..... I'm doing this for ME!!!

So my current plan is to make June 1st my official "start" date for getting ready. I'm hoping to do some hiking at local parks (unfortunately we don't live that close to the trail) couple of times a week to get ready. The steep climbs make me the most nervous....at Girl Scout camp this past weekend there was an incline from the shower house to our camp....it winded me but good. I was NOT happy!

If you'd like to check out the trail I'm speaking of here's the website: www.fltconference

If you have some advice....please share!!!! I'm going to be relying on John a bunch for this, but it will be so good for us on so many levels. We'll be doing it as a couple, making it OURS. It will be great exercise and, if gas stays reasonable, it will be inexpensive! I can't wait to start learning & preparing!!!!

You're going to love it. I did the 70 miles that cross Chenango county which is fairly easy and very pleasant. Here's a map: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/63489085/Ch

I know while looking at the trails for AJ's hiking merit badge I noticed all of that and thought it was pretty cool. Now our Adirondack hiking is alot of inclines. Great goal!

That is such an AWESOME goal!! I'm sure you are up to the challenge and will have so many special memories from your travels! I'm wondering, but suspecting I know the answer, if this trail is passable on a bike?

I've got a big cycling tour planned for later this summer. My first week-long tour:

Can't wait to hear more of your preparations and of course about your travels as well!
