For me convenience is key: it has to be close by, so I can walk over if I don't have any other means of transportation, and it has to be 24/7. The atmosphere is also important, they have to have great staff and fun classes. Hope this helps, and I think there's a spark people article on how to pick a gym. 3075 days ago
My biggest factor was location - if it was hard to get to then I knew I wouldnt go. Mine is about a 4min walk :)
Other factors: -lockers - are there enough? -showers - are there enough? (I looked at 1 gym that had TWO shower stalls, are you kidding me?!) -classes - do the times work for you, enough variety -pool? -how long is the wait for machines and what is the procedure ie sign up per machine -cost of course - make sure you know what is included in the cost -approachable staff who are willing to help. Some gyms wont help you with how to use a machine unless you pay for personal training, which is costly.
Pretty much all gyms will give a free trial, look around, ask for a tour and then ask to test out the place. Good Luck, I find the gym so helpful!! 3077 days ago
Well I picked my gym because I wanted an upscale facility that wasn't too crowded and wasn't full of bodybuilders LOL... I went with a fitness center that is run by a local hospital... It's a bit pricey but it's super nice and full of old people (who don't intimidate me at all). Oh, and the pool is never crowded, ever. 3077 days ago
I am all about the classes. I look at their class schedule to see if there are plenty of times going on. I too like the 24/7 convenience gyms, that way I could avoid the 7am and 6pm workout rushes. I felt uncomfortable having to wait to get on a machine. 3077 days ago
24/7 for convenience. Make sure they have all the equipment you would use and a pool for water exercise. You can swim and do pool exercises even if you are hurting. Safe locker rooms. No co ed hot tub/sauna's. 3078 days ago
