Running teaches so much!

I am surprised at the lessons one can learn from running. I have learned to put one foot in front of the other. Sounds like a simple concept, but in life, we make things more complicated than they need to be. When I'm on a run and have set a goal for where I want to be distance-wise, I have to tell myself to put one foot in front of the other and step by step, I will get there. It's the same way in life. When things get tough, one must persevere step by step. I have also learned about the battlefield of the mind. On the days when the track is calling me, but my knees are telling me how bad they hurt, it takes my mind to tell my body to pop an ibuprofen and get to the track. When I enter down another path at the cemetery, after I've already run six, it's my mind that tells me, "Yes, you can make it down one more path." Every choice in running and every choice in life begins in the mind. Some days when life gets you down...there's no better feeling than the pavement under your feet, your rhythmic breath, and your tunes in your ears...drowning out the world.
