Day 40 - No TV

Sunday, April 01, 2012

Well, here it is at last, the final day of my absolutely no TV during Lent commitment. And what did I learn? Silence is golden! Although I thought the time would go slow and I would be missing so much, I really didn't miss anything. What I gained was a whole lot more - more relaxation relishing in classical music and a good book, more conversation on a deeper level with my husband, more sleep since I tended to go to bed earlier, and most of all, more of a sense of God's presence while reading His word and praying. My husband once again has been a true partner in my lifestyle adjustments - but he tells me he is really glad we shut the tv down for these last 6 weeks and just enjoyed the sounds of silence. The tv will go back on - tomorrow I'll start catching up on Once Upon a Time. But I do believe the tv time will be few and far between while the kids are still away at college. I'm certainly not desperate to watch it. I'll catch key sporting events and the 2-3 shows we actually watch, but as for sitting on the couch mindlessly flipping through the channels until I find something - I don't see those days coming back. I so enjoy the reading, talking, and praying that have taken the place of the less than enriching, emotion sapping TV. My mood has been amazing - friends and co-workers have really noticed! When they ask my secret to being so upbeat and sounding refreshed all the time - I tell them, try turning off the TV for a while - see what it can do for you!

I thank God for laying this on my heart - I get it now!
