Girls on the Run 5k - Dec 10, 2011

Sunday, December 11, 2011

The 5k benefited the foundation that gives these girls free New Balance running shoes and provides a workshop to build self-esteem and healthy habits. This was a really fun event. Lots of energy and lots of motivation. I know it's primarily for the girls, but it worked its magic on me too.
The course was pretty cool. What I didn't realize is that the last mile was on gravel/dirt path. That mile seemed especially long.

The turnout was HUGE. There were over 1000 participates. 300 of those were 3rd to 6th grade girls that were part of the organization that this 5k benefited.

I finished with a time of 41:35, which is 3.5 minutes shorter than the time it took me to go the same distance my junior year of highschool. So instead of an average pace of 14.5 min/mil, I went 13.4min/mil. That makes me very happy since 3 months ago, I couldn't jog for a minute without being completely winded.

I have my finishers medal, and a snazzy shirt (size L). This is the end of this year's events, but it's not the end of mine. I've dropped 2 pant sizes, and 2 shirt sizes since I've started SP. I beat my high school time on the 5k. I'm proud of myself and that's what I need to continue my journey to a healthier me.

    emoticon job.

I know my reaction to last event of the year was to wonder whether I wanted to schedule a virtual one here on SP and to try to decide how many I wanted to aim for next year. They're just that fun and challenging.
