I did it on 9/15. I was lukewarm about it, "just trying it", and not sure I would KEEP doing it. I gave up meat, dairy, and eggs -- anything with a face or a mother.
Why? I don't have an ethical issue about animals, frankly. I'm sure if I knew more about it or visualized the slaughter process I might develop a position on this, but that is NOT why I did it.
I just needed to get some control over my weight and my cholesterol. I needed to start feeling some sort of "mastery" over both areas. I did some research and found the Caldwell Esselstyn book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. I have never had any heart "events" but have had high cholesterol for a few years now.
I have taken a statin for years and expected to take one for the rest of my life. I needed to lose 50 lbs. And I felt pretty crappy.
So I did it. I "went" vegan. And guess what? It's been two months and I have lost 13.5 lbs, with no feeling of being deprived or concern about counting calories. I have done some measuring, but not too much. I use Almond Milk (60 cal / cup) in my lattes. I still drink espresso.
Here are the results of my latest blood test:
Overall Chol: 177 (was 268 on 5/18/2010)
(healthy) HDL: 41 (was 44 on 5/18/2010)
(Lethal) LDL: 106 (was 207 on 5/18/2010).
I'm thinking this vegan thing may stick around for awhile... Yay!!
