The Little Sparrow

Thursday, October 13, 2011

The end of Spring, or maybe it was early Summer, I noticed this little Sparrow. I pointed it out to my DH. We figured it was a young bird since we have never seen it before. I have a table I use for re-potting plants at the end of our driveway. I also have a small bird seed holder on the table for the birds that hang around our driveway. The little Sparrow flies down to the table and helps itself to seed. It is always alone. I was worried about the bird, wondering if it will ever make it in the world of birds. It shows up every now and then, and this week I have seen it on the table a few times. Still alone. I started to feel sorry for it again, but then I thought..."it made it...It's eating, and drinking, or it wouldn't be here". My DH and I have watched the bird. We think it is a bit slow. It isn't super afraid of me like all the other birds. It stands funny sometimes, and it's eyes look a bit off. DH thought maybe it can't see as well. Who knows. I put a plastic dish with water out by the bird feeder so it can have water right by its side. DH is going to design some type of bird house for it to stay in for the winter, since we can get to freezing temps here. Or at least that is our plan...The bird might have its own agenda lol. Anyway it tolerated me taking pics of it yesterday. So here is "The Little Sparrow". It really has pretty colors!

You have a heart of gold Jeanne! Thank you, you are just like me! I am a real softie! The little bird is so cute!
The baby Robin is still in our garden now full grown. He tweets every time I go out the back door, so I whistle and he tweets back and we have quite a conversation. I think he is expecting food, he seems to like sunflower seeds chopped up as I have not got mealworms now. I have harvested my first sunflower, so that should keep him going through the winter! emoticon

Oh, my heart goes out to that little guy. I always root for the underdog. Let us know if it decides to winter with you. It couldn't have picked a better human to hang close to!

You are right that you weren't sure it was a sparrow. It looks like it has a little red on it and the stripes on the chest make it a female house finch. I just heard that finches can get like a "pink eye" type condition and maybe that is the eye issue. She made be having a hard time finding food and knows that is there so she keeps coming back. Other birds may know she is sick and that is why she is alone. Good luck!

He really does have some pretty colors. How nice that you are making him a little house of his own! Hopefully he will move right in.

How sweet :) I hope all goes well with your beautiful little bird.

We love to feed & watch the birds at our house. I have a hummingbird feeder right outside the dining room window so we can see them during dinner. My kids will always look up and say, Oh, we have a little visitor.
