Saw a different Hawk today

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

I originally stopped to take a pic of fog hanging over the Tehachapi Mountains.

I kept hearing a Raven. He wasn't crowing loud, just a quiet squawk. I looked up, and there he was on top of a telephone pole. He would jump up, squawk, then fly down a bit, then repeat the process. I wondered, what in the world is the bird doing, when I spotted a Hawk on the same pole. It didn't look as big as the Red Tailed Hawk we see often in our area. I snapped a couple of pics (couldn't get a good close up) of the Hawk, then when my Hubby got home we decided it was a Cooper's Hawk. You don't see them often, so I was thrilled. Leave it to the Raven to try and start trouble. I thought the Raven was crazy. You don't mess with a Hawk, but Raven's have a reputation to live up to. The Raven flew off when it saw me.

The Hawk didn't like me looking at it either. It took off after a bit.

I then went to my friends house, and played ball with her dogs. Trimmed her roses, and took more photos.

These two pics are the same rose bud, but at different angles. I couldn't decide which pic I liked the best, so I will let you decide.

A Bee flew into this rose.

This isn't the most exciting shot, but to me it looked like the rose bud was hugging the bigger rose. Yes I have a big imagination.

There was a Sparrow looking for bugs or worms.

Sparrows in my yard. I wonder if they will ever get used to me. Would be nice hehe

I used to hike daily at a nature center and met a guy, Roger who was retired and spent his days there taking pictures. He introduced me to Cooper's hawks and Sandhill Cranes and had awesome pictures to share from time to time. He taught me that deer shed their antlers every year, which got me in the habit of scanning the ground for castoffs. I finally found a small one, slightly cracked, a few years ago and was so gratified! We've moved to another location, but the cool thing is I still think of Roger because we happen to be directly below a migratory path for a group of Sandhill Cranes that migrate between Florida and Canada every year. Roger was right... once you hear their distinctive call, you'll always remeber it.

You should make a collage of all the rose photos you have taken and then use it for your background sometime. It would look awesome!

That third rose has a spot of sunlight that gives the appearance of a little lamp inside of it, looks so cool. nice birds too.

I have alot of hawks around my house. They like to dive bomb my bird feeder, sometimes they get one, usually a mourning dove because they are on the ground. I get very upset when I see it happen, but it is nature. The hawk has to eat too. Now I have an owl around. I have been hearing him for months and just got a look at him a few weeks ago. It is a screech owl. I would love to get a photo of him.

I like birds, but know next to nothing about the different kinds. I can spot robins and hummingbirds and that's about it. lol! I love that you know what all your birds are!

I was just telling my husband on Sunday I want to know more about hawks as we have quite a few around here and I can't tell what they are without a bird book close by. He does look like the Cooper's Hawk you linked to.

Gotta love nature! My Dad taught me to love birds, and I am always watching the hawks. We have a lot around here and they are so interesting to watch. Beautiful roses! Looks like you had a great day!

Those roses are gorgeous ! My Nan used to feed the sparrows in England and she could get them to come right to her window. I don't know how long it took her or how she did it I just have pictures of me and her sitting by the window feeding the sparrows. She died when I was 5 though so I didn't really ask any scientific type questions !
