Autumn leaves

Saturday, October 01, 2011

My father's funeral was yesterday.
I had written a eulogy but didn't know until I stood there by his coffin if I would be able to talk. It did me good to actually DO that and talk about his life.
I had picked out the music he loved for the ceremony. Lots of jazz, Keith Jarrett, John Coltrane, Jan Garbarek. Words and music made it warm and personal and my friends and family remarked that it was a beautiful service. I thought so too, I think it'll be a good memory afterwards.
We carried out the coffin to Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble: www.youtube.com/watch?v=

It did me a lot of good to have family and friends and kids in the family laugh and play around us as we gathered together for coffee. We walked up to the flower-covered grave again before we went home and collapsed on the couch, sharing a bottle of red wine with my darling who has been an incredible support during this time.
Today I'm just empty. And a little bit relieved the funeral is over.

Now I need to empty his apartment and clean it. Fortunately my father's brother is ready to help me with that.

Oh Marit, somehow I missed this... I am SO sorry. I can only echo the sentiments already offered, along with hugs. You remain in my prayers, dear friend.

    Hi sweet pea.
What a beautiful send-off you gave your father. It WILL be a beautiful memory for you. It's hard to lose dad ... can't believe my own has been gone for over three years. Wish I was there to give you a hug.

The music is beautiful...I know you made your dad proud. How wonderful that you were able to deliver the eulogy. That took a lot of courage.

It sounds like a wonder service and tribute to your Dad. You obviously did a great job and it was filled with love and even the laughter of children, which is great.
I know you're exhausted but I'm so happy you have the help and support of your love.
    Take care !!

It sounds like it was a lovely service. I'm certain you did your Dad proud. I know it will be hard to clean his apartment and go through his things, but I think it will help bring up all the good memories to focus on. I'm glad you have friends and family around you. I hope you will have some time to take care of yourself and your own needs too.

It sounds like it was a beautiful ceremony, and that all your work and planning was a success. You must now be exhausted. I imagine having the kids around is a big help. Even those that are old enough to understand are unable to keep from laughing and being kids for very long....which can be a big relief for the adults.

I hope you have lots of help for cleaning out your Dad's apartment. That's going to be hard. I wish I lived nearby and could help you. I continue to hold you in my thoughts.
