Juice Fast Update/New Plan

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

First a little background info - this April I was in a good groove with diet and exercise when I started having almost daily migraines. At the end of April they were so bad I quit exercising entirely and basically just suffered through them for the next couple of months. Near the end of July I was surfing through Netflix and found a documentary called "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" - about a guy that lost a lot of weight and improved his health through juicing. What got my attention was a lady who tried juicing and was able to get rid of her migraines. I was at the end of my rope and decided it was worth trying if I could get some pain relief. I did five days of strictly juice, then another 10 days of mostly juice with a small meal of pureed veggies or soup for supper. Within just a couple of days my migraines improved. I'm still having hormonal migraines around my TOM, but it sure beats having one almost every day! I think one of the reasons it worked for me is that it gave my jaws a rest from chewing (I have severe TMJ). When I decided to do the juice fast it was strictly for pain relief - I didn't really expect to lose much weight, or even if I did, I thought I would gain it right back once I started eating normally again. It's been a little over three weeks since I started back on solid foods and I'm still down over 10 pounds - woo hoo! I just started a new exercise program last week and am debating doing another juice fast soon. Doing exercise tends to be hard on my jaws and I'm thinking they would benefit from periodic rest from chewing, but now that I'm lifting weights and all again I want to make sure I have enough protein, etc. to fuel my workouts. Maybe a combo of juicing and protein smoothies? Or, maybe I could juice on my cardio only days and eat normally on ST days? I'm still debating what will work best for me.

Yesterday I started a program I've tried before in the past, but never finished. Its based on a book called Ten Years Younger - supposedly if you follow the program for 10 weeks at the end you'll look/feel ten years younger. My birthday is in nine weeks so I thought if I could follow it from now until then that would be a great birthday present to myself. Its basically a sensible diet and exercise program that also includes recommendations for skin care, relaxation, supplements and detox. I'd like to finally start a program and actually finish it! My goal is to be consistent and follow the program as closely as I can, but not give up and quit if I don't get it 100% right. My motto for now will be doing something is always better than doing nothing!

Sounds like a great new plan. We have to be gentle with ourselves some time.

When is your birthday, mine is the end of next month. I like to use that time as a time for self-reflection and redirection.

You will do very well. You deserve this present to yourself.

I've been thinking about a juicer for my Mom. What kind do you use? I haven't tried it myself because I need to chew cruncies. But Mom has trouble with veggies especially unless they are cooked dead. Thanks
