Saving Dinner the Low Carb Way

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

Hi All! Saving Dinner the Low Carb Way by Leanne Ely is an awesome cookbook. The title reads:

Saving Dinner the Low-Carb Way
Healthy Menus, Recipes, and
the Shopping Lists
That will keep the
Whole Family
at the Dinner Table

I use this book when life starts getting busy and I just need to be told what to do, and now is a good time for that with the many fall activities that are starting to fill up my family's life. This book helps me to have a low carb option for myself each night and also provides low carb servings suggestions for a side dish AND an additional serving suggestion for the rest of the family.

Here is an example of how the book works. There is a delicious low carb pulled pork recipe that includes a low carb side coleslaw and an additional serving suggestion that adds a whole wheat bun and bar-b-que sauce. I would enjoy the pulled pork and cole slaw, and the rest of my family would have theirs with b-que sauce on a whole wheat bun. (I also have penciled in to serve with sweet potato fries and regular fries). Everybody is happy and I can stay on track and eat healthy. When my weight is down generally I can eat the additional serving suggestion as well because it is often whole wheat or brown rice. I do stay away from the pototaes though, substituting sweet potatoes for myself.

Each week includes a crock-pot recipe for the busiest day, some type of fish (or two), chicken, beef and generally a soup or vegetarian dish. Meat and meatless substitutions can be made along the way to tailor it to your personal tastes. The book is separated into seasons, providing six weeks worth of recipes for each one.

Everything you need for the recipe is on a master shopping list which includes six meals for a week. There have been many times when I have opened the book to use a favorite recipe or used only a part of a week's list but when the going gets tough and I just need to be told what to do I take the whole book along with me to the store and get 'er done.

Saving dinner has a great website with a "menu mailer" option where you can have the menu, shopping list and recipes delivered directly to you via Internet each week. I have used this service many times as well and I have saved and printed off each week's menu mailer. I have two nice binders where I keep all my menu mailers in sheet protectors.

Both the Saving Dinner the Low Carb Way cookbook and the savingdinner.com website have been such a huge help to me over the years. I hope you will look into it and give it a try yourself! The last part of the book title reads, "Will Keep the Whole Family at the Dinner Table". This is probably the most important thing of all. During those busy times, with the help of this system, I am able to provide a well rounded, healthy dinner for my family each and every night and it is around our family table where relationships are built and memories that will last a lifetime are made.

Thanks for reading! Be sure to check out the web site. I got my book on Amazon, which I think is the cheapest way to go. I'd love to hear if you have ever used this book or on-line menu mailer yourself and how you like it! What are your favorite recipes?

(caveat - I just like Saving Dinner. I am not an employee of the company nor do I recieve any profit or benefit for this endorsement. It is my desire to help others along with their healthy life-style by sharing what has worked for me over the years and that is why I share this post here on Sparkpeople.)
