I grew up with a garden as a kid and I have one now! Make sure you get the biggest sized plants they have. Starting from seeds will take a long time and the summer growing season is almost over. (Unless you are doing an autumn/winter garden.)
I have big tomato plants I have been picking from for the last month. YUM!

You can always grow things in containers or pots I have several scattered around the patio and at the front entry of the house. Just pick out things you think are pretty and you will enjoy just looking at them. The gain is just that a gain and you know how to fix the problem. I can't eat bread as I am gluten intolerant so never tried any bread products myself. You sound like a carb girl to me, just by the things you like. I did make the pancake this morning for breakfast and added some poppy seed in for flavor it was awesome, I ate a white peach with it this morning so yummy. Have a great time picking out plants.
