I'm a triathlete who is scared to swim

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Scared to swim laps, that is. I have not swam laps since my 2nd sprint tri which was May 10th, I believe. I wasn't sure I ever wanted to do another tri. I was scared during the open water swim. And, swimming laps sounds like drudgery right now. And, I feel like my form isn't so great, so why keep practicing with poor form?

So, why am I headed out to swim laps this morning?

#1...because it's good for me! I had a REALLY hard run yesterday, and my legs need a rest.I also have a tough run coming up tomorrow. I'd rather go do a couple of classes, but it'd be better for my body to SWIM! (No impact, works entire body, gives legs some rest.) So, I've made the TOUGH choice & decided to go for it.

#2...because I DO want to do a triathlon again next spring and I need to get over this fear!

I'll let you know how it goes!!! And, I do plan on joining some kind of weekly group this fall. I just haven't quite figured out the specifics!

Here I go... emoticon

Good for you for confronting your fears! You are an inspiration to all of us. I'm scared to sign up for a bike race. I think I need to get over that and just do it.

I think you made a wise choice! I am making myself hit the pool this week too! I never like going, but I never end up regretting it once I get going! Just keep swimmin' emoticon

Swimming is so much more of a mental thing than people would think... but the more you get out there and do it the more you'll completely change your mind! Have a really nice swim - we're all cheering for you!

Swimming is definitely my least favorite part of a Tri. I didn't learn to swim until 3 years ago and I was totally scared of water. TIME in the water and lots of practice makes swimming easier. My swim coach told me I had to learn to play in water before I would ever like water.....Lots of play TIME later and I love the water. My form may not be the best but then we all need something to work on. Hang in there and keep swimming and it will get easier. emoticon

I'm with you. Swimming is hard. I to felt that my form wasn't what it should be because it was just to hard. So I joined a Masters swim class with a knowledgeable swim instructor ( ranked 3rd in the nation in Butterfly) and have made tremendous gains. She really helped my stoke and her workouts keep it from getting to boring. Which swimming can be boring. Swimming 2300-2600 metes per workout know. Went to the lake with some tri friends and practiced, no problem. got the confidence so onward and forward. It just like everything else you have tackled, train and you can do it. I would recommend the master class. I have my first real open water tri this weekend. Its a sprint but a 500m lake swim. Sshould be fun. Hope I don't parboil.

I can totally relate to you. Swimming is my least favorite thing to do. Interesting how we're both scared of the water but we still do Tri's despite of it. I get what you're saying about why keep swimming with bad form. It's amazing how many different things you have to think about when you're swimming. One of my goals is to work on my form and be confident in open water swims.

Just keep facing your fears! One of these days you're going to wonder what on earth you ever had to be afraid of!!
I'm kind of the same way about swimming laps, it gets so boring, you can't really talk and swim, and you can't listen to music. I'm pretty sure I'm going to register for a Masters swim program that starts in September and goes until June. Lots of intense time trials, endurance swims, working on proper form, that should all help with the drudgery. As for OWS, I haven't tried much of it but I hear a wet suit helps A LOT!! Do you have one?

After the waves I had to swim in this past weekend - some laps in the pool would be so relaxing and awesome!!!

In the same boat with you....

I wanted to do the swim clinic with my tri training club, but their pool was at the wrong times and location.

Maybe you could find something similar....
