Husband out of ICU

Tuesday, August 02, 2011

He's still bleeding though. He's received four blood transfusions and he's still anemic which means that the bleeding hasn't stopped. He's still in the DT's as well so they're still medicating him to control the tremors. I want them to look into his cardiac situation because his legs and feet are so swollen i think he has an enlarged heart. I found out that alcoholism can cause that. That gives him one more risk factor besides hypertension and heredity which he already has. He is always out of breath too. He is just so messed up physically it's going to be a long battle. Even though he claims he won't drink again because this ordeal has been too painful a couple people have mentioned that he'll forget just like we forget the pain of childbirth. I tasked him to write about the experience so when he feels the urge to drink he can read it and remember. He has agreed to go to rehab straight from the hospital. There are going to be lots of changes at the house too if he's going to live.

Hang in there, this sounds so challenging. To watch someone you love go through this and know it might happen again. Sometimes I honestly feel my husband might have to go through an issue like this because of my weight, and really, it's a similar thing. Something hard but within my control to turn around. I appreciate you sharing this. It's brave.

Thanks ladies. I tried Al Anon a couple years ago but since he wouldn't agree to treatment I didn't see the point of wallowing in my problems with others every week when I couldn't see an end to it. Now that there's hope I'll start going again.

I am so glad he has decided to go to rehab. Ultimately it is the users decision to go in to treatment and this is huge that he is going. And I also think the task of him writing his experience will be a good reminder for him when he feels the alcohol trying to take over. Maybe you could keep a copy for your self so if need be and he needs to hear the sound of reason you yourself can read his journal to himself.
    Be strong my friend!

Rehab will be the best thing for him. I'm glad he's agreeed. I think the journal to himself will be helpful as well.

Have you considered Al-Anon? Never used them myself but sometimes having someone whos been there too is nice.
