Nostalgia and surprises

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

I was up searching around my closet last night when I came across a box marked "Don't fit".

I had started it in the 70s with things that were still wearable but no longer fashionable. Then after my second pregnancy in 1980, when I finally realised that I would never again be 115 pounds, I began adding favourite t-shirts, jeans and shorts, in the hopes I'd be able to get into them again.

I opened it up and found a treasure trove inside! Clothes from back to my high school days (oh gawd, did we really wear hotpants in the 70s?) until 1985. There were size 6 (including those aforementioned hotpants) right on up to size 14.

I think I can forget the size 6 and 8...the waistbands barely make it to my pelvic bones. Honestly, I'm kind of glad. I'm 53 years old. Who wants to see that squeezed into a teeny, tiny pair of Daisy Dukes?!

I also found my Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd t-shirts. I was crazy about both when I was a teen. I won't be keeping them or the Black Sabbath one. My daughter loves retro things like that so I'll give them to her.

But those weren't the real treasure. I found my two most cherished pair of jeans that I'd ever owned...my Levi 501s (jean size 32) and a pair of hiphuggers (size 12). The Levi's were the most comfortable jeans I'd ever worn. Long, button fly and nicely faded, I wore them all the time in the early 80s. I can't get them on yet but there may be hope that I will in the near future. The hiphuggers fit like the day I bought them. I used to wear both with a nice pair of platform boots. Boy, I wished I had found those boots in that box too!LOL I hemmed them this morning and will be throwing them into the wash tomorrow. The rest of those clothes will be tossed in the rag bin or boxed up and taken to Goodwill tomorrow.

Except for those teeny, tiny Daisy Dukes. A girl can still dream, eh? ;)

Do you have a box of treasure like mine too?

This is too cool and too funny!

When I first started losing weight I had boxes and boxes all from 8 to 24 that did not fit. As I lost the weight, I worked my way through the sizes. Boxing some to send to my sister who used what she could as she was losing weight and then she passed them on to charity. Others were sent directly to charity.

Nostalgia set in while I went through many of the things I had ... and I know there may be another box hidden away somewhere, maybe just maybe I will see if I can find it someday soon.
