Where is the summer going?

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

I'd like to say I'm enjoying the summer - I think it's more like I'm enduring it. So far, we've had 42 days of triple-digit heat with no end in sight.

Seems like it was just mid-May, and I was planning how much I'd get done this summer. How can we be facing August and the start of a new school year within a matter of DAYS? The only good thing about summer moving so quickly is that it will be October soon ... and with October comes a break in the heat!

My workouts have been pathetic lately. I can't walk because it's simply too hot - even first thing in the morning. Heat triggers migraines, so I have (finally) learned to take it easy when it's this hot. My gym workouts are suffering, too, as my schedule gets in the way of Friday workouts (local) and I'm tired of driving 35 miles each way (in 105-degree weather) to get to my other gym. In a way, I'm OK with this -- as the temperatures get cooler, I gain energy and stamina -- and I know in a couple of months I'll be back to challenging myself with longer workouts. Until then at least I'm not causing headaches.

I need to be more disciplined and work a bit of yoga or strength training before I start my day. This will be my goal for August - get out of bed earlier and do something positive. I'm pretty sure that picking up some weights in the morning will help banish the negative feelings I've been carrying around lately. Turning off the TV and not watching the news is starting to help, too - there's just so much negativity around and I tend to pick up and reflect it. I'm sure I'll be better off if I replace random TV with a yoga DVD.

I can't do much about the summer that's already passed, but I can certainly work to refocus myself so I can make some progress during the rest of the summer. Here's to refocusing my energy, staying cool, and giving myself some time to develop a more positive attitude.

How did you manage with weightlifting in the mornings? Was it hard to get up? Did it make a difference in your day?

Sorry you haven't been able to get out and workout.. maybe you can do the Leslie Sansone's (not sure of the spelling) walk away the pounds? It's a walking workout DVD. I used to do this when I first started trying to lose weight. It's nice because you can do it indoors, in the a/c :) Good luck with everything!
