Walking in the Swamp
Tuesday, July 26, 2011
I was geocaching with a young fellow and part of the track took us through one of those lowland, tree clad recharge areas that is wet and then in some drying out stage until the next rain.
The hard pan is about six inches down and the muck, for want of a more descriptive word, has a gluey consistantcy.
You can make progress but it almost pulls your sneakers off.
Your navigator keeps telling you where your goal is but you can't see it. The under growth blocks your view, your sweaty and the DW is never going to let you in the house with those shoes.
Then you come out in a little glade, the ground is six inches higher, dryer and the breeze feels like a cool drink.
You still can't see the objective but you tell yourself you can do this and believe it.
I was out of town last week (in the swamp) and Wednesday night I hope to find myself in one of those glades with a cool breeze.
