Maintenance is HARD work!

Monday, July 18, 2011

Here's how the conversation went....

Friend who only means the best: "Are you still losing weight?"
Me: "No, I haven't lost in a few months"
Friend: "Oh, you've hit a plateau"
Me: "Um, I guess so" (I exit feeling frustrated, inadequate, and embarrassed that I didn't have big weight loss numbers to share.)

Here's how it should have gone....

Friend: "Oh, you've hit a plateau"
Me: "No, not at all. I am running faster than I ever have. I have been able to maintain a weight loss of nearly 170 pounds for OVER 6 months. I am working out harder each time I hit the gym. I just started a weight lifting program. I feel amazing!"

Maintenance is hard work! I have been known to tell people that maintenance can be more difficult than losing weight. I need to remember this the next time I am feeling inadequate about my own progress.

Have you stopped losing?
How do you answer when people question your progress?

You are such an inspiration. Please don't let anyone get you down. Girl, you should be floating not walking. I would imagine you will have a lot of people that are jealous of you.
I lost 130 pounds and slowly put it back on and you have not seen such joy as some of my so called friends had when I did.
I am losing it again and its for me and I really don't care who likes it or who does not. I don't mean to be mean but you run into all kind of people and they should not control your moods. Keep up the good work. You are a beautiful lady, when you had your weight on and off. I just know you feel better at the weight you are.

Since 97% of people who lose weight regain it within five years, you certainly are right about keeping it off being the hard part.

I hate when I think of the perfect thing to say AFTER the fact.
Now you are prepared for the next inconsiderate slob who asks you such a personal question.
    Congrats on being today's MOD.
Enjoy your well-deserved day of fame!

I'm almost at a year with no significant loss. Whenever someone asks how the weight loss is going I tell them that I'm happy to be able to not go up and down, or steadily trend up, the way I did most of my life. Being the same weight for an extended period of time is an new experience for me and I'm adjusting to it.

Maintaining is hard work but you certainly have much to teach us all about how to rock that work!

Yes, that's well put. The first answer comes to mind, and if we wait out that pregnant pause, we can say what we really mean. Now I NEED to also put this into ACTION.
    And 170??? That's BEYOND AMAZING!!!!!!!!
