Dragon Boat Festivals Rock!!

Friday, July 15, 2011

Well, I can't believe it's been a week since the Dragon Boat Festival at Lake Banook. I know I'm late posting this but I was waiting for photos since I didn't have a camera with me to take some.

The festival was great! Unfortunately, it was raining that day but it didn't dampen our spirits. We get wet paddling anyway and we paddle in anything except in high winds and if there's a thunder storm!

A lot of people underestimated us when we got there. They had never heard of our aquatic club. We were there to have fun and really enjoyed ourselves.. we looked like happy chaos.. and people thought that because of that, we had no idea what we were doing. Our first steersman really underestimated us.. he used commands that we weren't familiar with and thought that we had no idea what we were doing. Well.. he told us what his commands meant.. then we showed him who was THE dragon boat team! He later apologized to a few of us. He was the best ever... especially when he told me we were the ones that impressed him the most and the only team that really paddled in tandem! ROAR!!

We won our first race and our time was 58.25 seconds for a 200m. On our second race, we came in third. We thought we really sucked but it turns out that we finished it in 55 seconds!! We came in third but shaved 3 seconds off our time! It was fantastic! We got really pumped because we found out we made it to the final rounds.

Alas, the second round didn't treat us nicely. The organizers decided to up the race times because the weather was getting worse. When it was our time to race, we were missing two people.. and 3 showed up late.. We had to race to get to the start of the race and as soon as we got there.. they started the race. We had no recovery time. We finished the race in 1:00.48 minutes.. I suppose that wasn't bad considering we were missing some people!

Here are some of the pictures from Saturday:

here we are watching some of the races before ours.. checking out the competition!

The start of a race..

and they are off!!

Heading to go to our first race.. no, you can't see me .. I was way in front.. I couldn't keep my excitement in check! lol

Waiting for our turn!

Loading the dragon boat!

Our coach Mark..

The Dragon!!

the paddle..

After our win and getting off the dragon boat.. can you see how happy I am?

Our first steersman... he was the best!

it got very very wet though..

My nephew and I ... It was a great day!

I wish I had pictures of the race to show you but unfortunately I don't. Hopefully some will crop up one day so I can get a copy framed.. My first dragon boat race!! I can't wait to do it again!

Sit up....paddles up...take it away!

How awesome! Looks like so much fun. Do you sit two to a row in the boat? Is it easy to fit two larger people next to each other?

Came from the Huddle on the Done Girls Wall to see what Dragon boat Tuesday meant. I remember now seeing this on the Bachelorette, actually. Didn't know this was done in the US! You are in the US, right? Whereabouts? Congrats on your success with the racing! But.. even more - CONGRATS on your success with weight loss and healthy living!!

Wow! I have to admit, to my recollection, I had never heard of dragon boat racing before I met you, but after looking up dragon boats on wikipedia, what I saw is what I had imagined.. either way, I love that you're unique, having fun, being active, being with family (your nephew), and living life!

I'm so happy you have something that brings you so much joy (and is exercise to boot). Congrats on the win. By the time the season is over, you'll have so much upper body strength that you'll be able to hit the professional arm wrestling tours and kick some tush!
