I did it....finally race walked in a 5K!!!

Tuesday, July 05, 2011

I finally did it! And it was awesome! I walked my 1st 5K and did it in 40 minutes and 16 seconds! I did it in my own town too! It was the Frankenmuth Volkslaufe Race. There was a 20K, 10K and 5K run and then a 5K walk. Since it was my 1st race I decided to speed walk it with my friend. I just wanted to get the feel of what it was like before I tried to run a race.

It was awesome! Everyone was focused on doing their best but there was an unspoken camaraderie amongst all of us. Before, during and after the races people were kind and supportive. The race was well organized. There were about 2500 people in all the races with the 5Ks being the largest # of people. I felt very confident in my walking as I even passed several "runners". I ended up placing 7th in my age category 50-54. I'm not ashamed of my age--in fact I wear it as a badge of honor! Unfortunately there are a lot of us 'old ladies' that like to race walk! My friend who is in the age category below me finished 5 seconds behind me and won 3rd in her age category!!!! She walked away with a beer stein trophy and I walked away knowing I beat her and that us older ladies rock! hahaha

I'm already thinking I want to do this again and maybe even run it next time. There were a lot of people out there running that weren't in as good a shape as me and they were doing their best to run....inspiration if I've ever seen it! I WILL do it--I WILL :)

That is awesome! I am curious to know how far 5K is. I know it's 5 Kilometers but I have no idea what that is in non-metric equivalent. I'm gonna look it up! HUGS!!

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon That is fantastic! These races people get into sound like so much fun! I can never run a race thanks to RA and osteo, but race walking is a possibility after all my surgeries finally get done..
Keep up the great work! That is the way to show those young 'uns ;)
