8 Glasses a day is just a MYTH

Friday, February 16, 2007

Please READ the references at the bottom...

I'm NOT just making this up!
There is NO basis for insisting on getting 8 glasses of water a day - that is just folklore that grew out of a 1945 recommendation. The original recommendation noted that everyone should get 8 glasses of water, but that MOST OF THIS IS CONTAINED IN THE FOOD WE EAT!!!
If you read carefully, you will also note that ALL fluids "count" toward the total (NOT just water), and caffeine is NOT a diuretic. These are all commonly stated MYTHS.

Bottom line: Drink when you're thirsty. PERIOD.

EDIT: Second reference blasts the "8 x 8" crowd:

I realize you wrote this almost three years ago, but I'd like to comment.

While I've certainly had a weight problem for most of my life, I never had a problem with liquids. I've almost always only drank water from the time I was a kid (I had juice sometimes when I was very little, and now I have coffee every 1-3 days). I never felt the need to drink that much water, even when it was the only beverage I drank, period. I tried when I first joined SP, and I could only get to 6. So, as someone who's never had a soft drink, I can say from personal experience that 8 glasses a day is generally excessive. While I can't say the same for my food intake, I trust myself to know what I need when it comes to water...and it's not 8 glasses.

I'm in agreement. Most of the fluids needed daily are contained in what we eat. As for drinking plenty of water, well common sense dictates we should, as for how much, personal preference. Thank you for your opinion.

Very interesting article. I agree, my body can't handle 64 oz each day. At least right now. Maybe if I was doing some intense activity in the middle of the summer I could easily consume 64+. That would be because my body needs it at that time.

    Thanks for the article.

Interesting article. I do believe that everyone's body is different, and that 8 glasses of water a day is just to give people a guideline. And more active people may need more water than say someone that's less active or someone who eats a ton of fruits. Bottom line, some may need less, some more. I'm always thirsty, so I'm one of those that need more :)
