I have switched addictions!!!!!!

Sunday, June 05, 2011

On May 10th (a date dear to me as it was the second anniversary of the beginning of my SparkPeople journey) I stopped smoking, an addiction I have had for over half of my life!!!!! I am very sure that many of the things I have learned about myself through SparkPeople have helped me overcome the cravings, urges, and all that go along with ending this habit, but I have to confess that I replaced it with another addiction!!!!!
I have become addicted to riding my bike!! I ride it every day that it isn't raining HARD, and when it is too nasty to get out, I ride my recumbent bike indoors. I just can't seem to stay off the bikes.
I am not a speedster at this point, but I am using the biking to get my legs ready for my knee replacement surgery on June 17th.
I am already missing the few days (I hope it will only be a short time) that I won't be able to ride and I haven't even had the surgery yet.
Even though I will need to stop riding "cold turkey", I expect to get back on track very soon. I will be hanging on to this habit as long as my knees keep bending!!

Congrats on your successful addiction switch!

Now I'M intimidated. Remember how we said that sometime this summer we would meet in Fargo and go bikeriding? I'm certainly not up to your level of ridership! emoticon emoticon

    Hi Greg ,
You continue to amaze me with your progress. Giving up cigarettes after so many years is monumental!
With your new post surgery bionic body and improving lung capacity you should sign up for senior olympics.

    You da man!

Way to go on the Stop Smoking,
I quit back in the 80s and have never regretted it.
Now everywhere you go, its Non Smoking, which makes me Happy.

Can you believe what people have to pay for a carton now? WOW I would rather spend that on Fun things.

Your new passion is biking, good for you. Now that Summer is almost here, I hope we can do more biking on our Trails here in WA
    Good for you :) emoticon

Gregg, they may use a stationary bike for rehab - and you can get your fixx again :-)

I was a smoker for 20 years, and I am glad I have exchanged the habit for another one - a more healthy one.

I saw your status update. Perhaps you should consider using the bike as a vehicle for commuting - depending on how comfortable you are riding where you live.

Gregg, SHHH. Your letting the cat out of the bag. When people ask me what my secret is I tell them to trade an unwanted addiction for a different hopefully healthier addiction. There's no way around it. We love our addictions.
It's hard to quit an addiction, but it's easier to trade addictions. There it is. The secret's out. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
