Race weekend - Part 1
Tuesday, May 24, 2011
Sorry to make this a 2 parter, but the race will be quite lengthy. I hope to have it finished tomorrow or Thursday.
FINALLY…Mississauga Marathon weekend
Get up, leave the house, get gas, realize I’m 5 miles from home without my passport (eek!), make it to the border at Detroit, find out border agents don’t have a sense of humor, drive a long distance without seeing much, finally make it to Mississauga and check into my hotel. I’ll slow down a bit now. I leave the hotel for the race expo. I find the expo hall and get my race packet, look around and decide NOT to buy anything because on Saturday I plan to check out the expo at the Toronto race. I leave the expo hall and go driving around the area along the coast. I find a nice restaurant on the water and have a bite to eat before heading back to the hotel. I settle in, watch some TV and turn in early; not great sleep.
I get up looking forward to seeing all Toronto has to offer. I planned to conquer my fear of heights by going up in the CN tower and looking out! I open my curtains to fog, rain and crummy weather. I decide that I’m going on with my plans and leave for Toronto. I arrive at the Toronto Expo and find pretty much the same exact things that I found at my own Expo, but one thing calls out to me; a black l/s half-zip with “CANADA” down the left sleeve and a small Canadian flag in the mid back. They didn’t have my size, but I went to one of the Running Room stores and snagged it; a size smaller and VOW to fit into it by fall. I left their expo and the fog is still thick, so thick that you couldn’t even SEE an 1,815 foot tall TOWER! I just happen to luck into seeing the BASE and with parking running $20-$25 I decide to just drive around and see some of the neighborhoods and the University district. I head back over to Mississauga’s expo and buy a shirt from the race and grab some lunch. I head back to my hotel to clean up for dinner with a good SP friend (GOEGIRL) and her husband. We go to an Olive Garden type restaurant and have a great evening. I go back to my hotel, layout all my gear and turn in; best night of sleep in days.
