5,000 miles

Saturday, May 21, 2011

On August 30, 2009 I joined the The Virtual Walk/Run Challenge Team.. The first challenge was to Walk across America. The walk started in Virginia and ended in Florence Oregon with a total mileage of 4,063. I reached Florence at the end of January. Since I was going to continue walking, I decided that I would start again. Because I am walking more, the trip is some what different . I have walked 954. 2 miles since 2/1/11. What surprised me was when I totaled the miles, I found I have walked 5000 miles . On Sept 1, 2009, I hoped that some day I would reach Florence and never gave a thought to the miles that would come with it.

I am excited, although it was a virtual map, the miles that I have walked were actual miles that I have accumulated. I am proud of that as about 2 years ago I couldn’t walk more than 10 minutes . I don’t know why, except I was not motivated to walk. I did walk when shopping and going places, but to walk as a exercise , I found it to be a problem. I had to force myself to go out and walk, after a couple days at 10 minutes I started to increase the minutes. The more I walked , the more I enjoyed it and now I would say, I love to walk. Last year I wrote a blog Should walking be fun. This month I am averaging about 9.6 miles a day. Being retired, I have plenty of time to walk so I walk a couple different times each day . It is such a joy to walk, being from Florida, I have been able to walk everyday, I have seen so many beautiful things in nature and a few days ago, we experienced a beautiful sunset and watched the full moon come up.

If you would like to see what the program looks like click on to our team The Virtual Walk/Run Challenge Team. Scroll down and you will see a question “where are you today” Go ahead and click on it and you can see the results of our members. What is good about this program, A person can start anytime. It is not a race against anyone. Our members are in a number of different states heading for Florence Oregon. To me, it is a way to visually see what your miles are doing. . It doesn’t matter how many miles you walk, it might be .1 of a mile or 20 miles, It just gives a great visual on what those miles represented.

I started maintenance over 3 years ago and because of all the previous losses and gains, I had no idea if I could continue to be successful or as they say, fall off the wagon. I knew I needed some kind of support and motivation. I feel so fortunate that I found SparkPeople and it has been a blessing in my life. Not only I have maintained the weight, I found that Spark has changed my life in many ways. I think everyone that is reading this knows that for themselves. To have a opportunity to join teams that support us , to have challenges like this Walk Across America is a bonus in life. Spark offers so many things for all of us who are on a journey to a healthier life. So a special thanks to Chris Downe, his team, Coach Nancy who started this challenge, Coach Nancy Lee who is the leader of The Virtual Walk/Run Challenge Team and who is a wonderful supportive motivated person. To the members on our team that really support each of us on a daily basis and to all of my SparkFriends that are on your own journey ,you have been a inspiration for me. I appreciate everyone of you .

Monty...Congratulations on your 5000 miles and starting again on your Walk Across America. Because I had read your earlier blog about completing your first WAA, I was inspired to start out on my own walk. So I joined up and have been logging my miles. I am not accumulating nearly the daily miles that you do. But even so, I am almost out of Virginia!!!! WooHoo.

Congratulations Monty on your 5000 miles, that is awesome!! I have another Spark friend who also "walked" across America, I believe she finished last year. As she was walking she would make little detours to see her Spark friends and also learn about the area's she landed in. Congrats and keep walking Monty!

Congratulations Monty. You are such an inspiration. Because of you, I started "walking acrodd America." When friends and co-workers tell me they are too old (usually between 55 and 65) I say checkout my spark friend Monty. Not only did he loose the weight, he just walked across America and is now headed back. They stop whining immediately. emoticon

Keep going Monty, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
