Cardio First or Last?

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

I have been wondering this lately... is it best to do cardio before weight training or to do it after weight training?

And if you only have 30 to 45 minutes in the gym, which one is best to do??

second 5 k on sunday, my goal is to simply get it under 40 minutes this time..

I'm going to throw this out there. It doesn't matter much. Some might say it depends on your goals. If you're looking to increase cardio (i.e. your race is the most important), then do your cardio first. If increasing strength is your goal, do your ST first.

One probably detracts from the other. The bottom line, you're probably not a professional athlete and your overall goal(s) is probably to increase strength and aerobic capacity, so you can probably get better by doing both regardless of order. Just keep doing stuff!

I somewhat recall the Spark article about cardio before resistance training also, however I am mystified at the recommendation and I would suggest resistance training before cardio. The point of resistance training is intensity, and you can't put the same intensity into lifts done after cardio. However that's partly because I don't do low intensity steady state cardio, I almost exclusively do hard steady state or interval sessions. If you do your cardio very light and it won't compromise your performance 'lifting, then you can probably do the cardio first as a general warmup. However I personally would never, ever do that, I'd always lift hard, then do cardio hard, then leave the gym.

If you only have 30-45 minutes in the gym, it depends. it depends on the rest of your program, depends on your goals, depends on if you are attempting to lose fat, maintain weight, or bulking. For me, cardio is way preferably an outdoor activity and the gym is for RT and such... training. If I had to guess I'd say the best answer is to do a metabolic lifting session for the entire time... but without more information my answer is near worthless.

Spark People says to do your Cardio before Strength. I forget why, but remember reading it. I try to do 3 days of strength training and 4 days of cardio, so I would do which one you need to get in that day. I am a sucker for cardio, I love it and would pick it over strength everyday! Good luck on your 5K. You can get under 40 minutes. Just keep on keeping on!
