Results of my mom's colonoscopy
Wednesday, March 30, 2011
My mom was scheduled for a colonoscopy on Monday. She started prepping her body for the procedure early Monday morning. Her appointment was at 8 am so she had to start drinking cleansing fluids around 4 or 5 am. She had a prescription for polyethylene glycol powder that she mixed with Gatorade. It can't be a pleasant experience drinking 64 oz of what seems to be runny Kaopectate. I was confused about the prescription because polyethylene glycol is something that is used in antifreeze. I guess there must some variation of it that can be safely used for the human body.
Anyway, we got to the hospital on time for check-in and them prepping her for the procedure there. She was already a bit nervous from the colonoscopy she had a year ago (they found a cancerous growth that had spread). To add a little bit more nervousness to this, the doctor was running about 45 minutes late. The procedure took about 30 minutes and then we waited for him to give us the results.
When the doctor arrived, he stated that nothing was found and she should return in 5 years for her next colonoscopy. That was great news for both of us. Mom was kind of worried because the colonoscopy she had a year ago led to surgery. At that time, they found a cancerous growth that had spread. She was in surgery the following day and had 12-14 inches of her lower intestines removed. Afterwards, she underwent chemotherapy for 6 months (as a precaution to ensure that all the cancer was removed from her body). This time she didn't have to go through that again. What a relief!!
