Saturday night we got a call from my son saying that our 1 mo old granddaughter was in the ER and the hospital was going to admit her. He was home with the 2 yr old. I headed up to be with her so he could go to be with his wife and daughter. I didn't get much sleep that night because of his calls to update me. The ER hospital ended up sending the baby by a NICU ambulance to Children's Hospital.
When they took her to the hospital she was very pale and blue and congested. They put her on oxygen and IV. They took blood, urine and even did a spinal tap. The first results came back negative for RSV, pnemonia and meningitis. Monday, the tests said it wasn't bacterial but some sort of virus.
I brought my 2 yr old granddaughter home Sunday morning. We had out Bible Study/Fellowship at 5:00 pm. I offered to stay with the baby that night so her parents could go home and get some sleep. It was a long night because we were in a "ward" and heard all the other babies cry, nurses talk, alarms go off etc., plus taking care of the baby. I basically held her from 10:30pm to 3:00am. At 3:oo the nurses fixed her IV which had become crimped and gave her a bottle. It was her first real good feeding since Sat am. At that point she fell asleep in the crib and I was able to lay down on the cot. I got some "sleep", but every hour I was "awakened" by a baby crying etc.
The baby had a rough day on Monday -- they had to up her oxygen level (they had lowered it Sun night) and she was very congested. She had to have vacuum suction because the bulb syringe wasn't getting anything. Mon night the hospital moved her to a private room in the NICU. That was nice because my son and his wife were able to sleep a lot better. The room had a bed that was curtained off for the parents.
Today she has been doing better. She is off oxygen and they are able to use the bulb syringe. There is talk that she might be able to go home tomorrow.
Meanwhile, last night (mon) my dad called to say he was in the ER. He was extremely dehydrated and had severe gout and was unable to walk. He was put on IV to get hydrated and was sent home at 2:30am. He is doing better today, but is on a clear liquid and yogurt diet.
Also, my husband went to the doctor on Mon and has a huge kidney stone. He will be have lithrotripsy in the next month to get it broken up.
Needless to say, my diet and exercise went out the window the last couple of days! I will be back on track hopefully tomorrow and will be able to get to the gym.
One fun thing though - I took the plunge and got my hair cut (about 6 inches off) on Sat. I haven't had it this short in over 10-15 years. I do like it.
