Month old

Thursday, March 03, 2011

I simply cannot believe Max was a month old yesterday. Oh my gosh time flies!!

We went for his one month checkup yesterday and the Dr. said she thought he was just perfect. This of course I knew but it's nice to hear! He weighs 9.8 pounds and is measuring almost 24 inches long. I couldn't believe it!! I have a few concerns about breastfeeding -- not sure I am producing enough milk to satisfy him so we are supplementing with formula at least twice a day. Any advice?? The Dr. said she was fine with it and I must be doing something right as he is thriving! But I really wanted to BF while I am home. I am drinking tons of water and trying to stay away from dairy but not sure what else to do.

As for my work out routine -- it doesn't exist yet. But I have managed to lose 20 pounds! Tuesday Max and I went out alone for the first time. I told one of my friends it felt like I was 16 and out with the car for the first time! We did great. I ran a few errands and then went to the Mall for a few laps. It was nice to get out and about.

Hope you are all doing well!!

My precious Max.

As long as you are getting plenty of rest and eating right (about 2,000 calories a day), you should be producing enough milk. If you think it his sucking ability, then you can rent a Medela double pump and give him your milk through a bottle (better for him than formula). I have heard people having more problems with boys nursing than girls, but my mom did it in the days when the doctors said it was bad for the baby and didn't have any problems. As for avoiding milk, that is only necessary if your baby seems to be lactose intolerant. I had one that was and one that wasn't - they are still that way today - so I avoided milk with only one child. My first had exclusively breast milk for about 11 months and the second one for about a year.

Rest and nutrition are key - sleep when the baby sleeps is truly the world's greatest advise, but even after I went back to work and was sleep-deprived, I was still making really good milk because I was a healthy eater. My sitter called it half and half because after it thawed from the freezing, half the bottle would be the fat - the best fat a baby can eat.

Good luck - if you have any more questions, just let me know.

    He is so precious!!!

There are a couple of herbal supplements that help with milk production: fenugreek and blessed thistle. They do work and are safe. Although, you may smell like maple syrup is emanating from you; but that isn't such a bad side effect.

I'm glad that you were able to get out for your first solo excursion! emoticon

Take good care and enjoy this special time!!!

I tried so hard to breast feed. My goal was one year. I didn't even make 3 months. I don't know if he didn't like my milk, I didn't suck right for him, or there were other issues. At about 1 1/2 month, in desparation, I made a bottle of formula that had given me from the hospital. He sucked it down and slept for 4 hours. I cried. I thought I had been starving him. He normally fed every 2 hours from me. I expressed milk for him and mixed it with formula for about a month. After that, he turned his nose up to any with MY milk in it. So I thru out the last expressed milk and started to diet. I can't say that I was upset. Dissapointed, definately. Relieved mostly. Just remember this: YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING FOR YOU AND MAX. Don't let anyone guilt you into right or wrong. YOU are the mom. YOU make the decisions (with your husband)

    He is soooo precious!

I did not have any milk come either time, so I can offer no advice there!

I remember my first outing with my first, then my first outing with both boys. It was crazy! It felt great to get out. When things get stressful, pack up the stroller, the kid, and get some air. It always worked for me and him. In fact, it still does!

    A month! Holy cow!
