"Classic" Start page to be phased out March 31 - provide suggestions for new Start here

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Hi everyone

To keep the site running more efficiently, we plan to phase out the "Classic" or old version of our Start page on March 31.

As part of this, on February 23 we automatically moved members on the Classic Start page to our new Start page. The reason was that we found that many members did not know about the new Start page, and many many older members have really liked making the switch. However, up until March 31 you can use a link on your Start page to change back to the Classic page page until March 31.

We are setting the date out a few weeks so that we have time to make any adjustments to the new Start page, based on member feedback. So if you have any feedback on the new Start page, please leave it in the comments below. We have already made a few tweaks to the new Start page, such as having a link to Favorites.

As always, thanks for your support and feedback!

Please put back together like it was so I can understand how to track and even read it. So confusing now and makes me question if can stay on the site. Nothing is easy anymore. Plus get rid of the ads. I want to be able talk to a person here and spend so much time deleting them.

I would like to be able to hide sections of "My goals and progress" that I do not use. I track only minutes of exercise, so nothing will ever show up in the "Calories burned" section - I'd like to hide it. And I want to have a choice about having my weight show on the start page. I sometimes show SparkPeople to friends and frankly do not share my weight with anyone except my doctor. If it showed pounds lost instead of actual weight, I wouldn't mind so much. The "Calories eaten" section is helpful to me. I use the Quick Track every day and wish I could place it above the "Goals and Progress" section, less scrolling.

For those who don't like the way the "Today's Features" section moves from tab to tab automatically, it will stop if you click on one of the tabs.

Two more changes I'd like to see is the ability to have the Spark summary calendar display my total steps for the day. I'd also like to be able to move my "Other Goals" up and down so I can group them together the way I want them. As it is now, a new goal must appear at the end of the list. I use this section of SP a LOT!

Thanks for all you do, SP. While I do have these "wants," I nevertheless think SparkPeople is an AMAZING site!

I would like the old ,old way of no matter where you come in from, Email or log in, the wheel was always there to remind you to spin. I come on at different times every day and it is hard to remember if you spun the wheel that day or not. I have broken several streaks because of this. Today for example, I had a heck of a time trying to find the wheel. I went to several different parts and 3 log ins (back to back) before I was able to get to the right spot.
This changing of things may be OK for people who are use to the computer and maneuvering around with it, but I have enough trouble just trying to get to where I want to go without all these changes all the time and fancy stuff that just makes this site more confusing.
If you don't want us to use the wheel for points anymore just stop it altogether. It would be better than trying this hide and seek game every day. I know if It was me, and I wanted somebody to use something every day...I would stick it in plain sight , so you make sure they don't miss it!
This would be like an advertiser trying to put an ad on to sell something, but hiding it behind a bunch of other stuff, so you don't see it. BAD FOR BUSINESS!

I find the tabs att the top of the page interesting and usually read most of them. The flashing from one to another is annoying. The new page is more compact and easier to find where I want to go.

I haven't been a SparkPeople person very long, but I like the new page. It is very colorful and will take getting accustom to it. Thanks for keeping the Pages 'free'.

Please, let us stop the auto-movement - triggers headaches for me as it is hard to focus since head injury. Also, please put back the note of who last posted on the "My recent posts". I use this alot to see if I want to go back to a thread or not.

    Thanks!

I have ADD and absolutely HATE when ANY site has sections of them that continuously change, such as ours start page is now doing and numerous advertisers on Spark are now doing. It is EXTREMELY difficult for me to concentrate on my intended item. PLEASE set up the site so that we can shut off ANY of those automated, rolling advertisements, unless we want to have them scroll ourselves.

I agree with NOTGIVINGUP49 about having the spin wheel pop up automatically when we sign-in. Too many times I have found that I have messed up a streak because I forgot about it without my reminder. If you don't want to continue to leave the choice of style of the start page up to us, at least, PLEASE allow us to keep the spin wheel reminder.

On a more positive note, I LOVE the picture of the little guy, I presume is your son, you are using for your background. He is soooooooooo adorable!!!!

I don't like how I can't click on a link and "open in new tab"... I have to do that because my internet is so slow it takes forever to open just one window, this way I can be reading one window while the others are loading, much more productive.

Other than that the new one is a bit cluttered but otherwise great!

I like the look of the new start page but I am not having much success getting to where I want to go just by clicking on the links provided. This has caused me to not come here every day and I am almost to the point of not using SparkPeople at all.

I DO NOT LIKE THE AUTOMATIC SCROLL FEATURE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NEW START PAGE

Yes, I know that I am shouting, but the constant flashing as it switches the tabs between the featured articles is very distracting and makes viewing the page uncomfortable. Please, Please, Please add the ability to shut off the automatic changes once you log-in, just like you can elect whether or not the "Feed" scrolls automatically at the side of the teams page.

I LOVE IT!! I agree with princess_twisty about people whining. People are always going to find something to complain about because as my husband says there are all kinds of people in this world. My dad used to say when he was alive that some people would complain if a million dollars fell from the sky and hit them on the head just because it hit them. You do what you need to do in order to improve for those of us who enjoy it and forget the rest who wouldn't be happy even if nothing ever changed. Thanks for all your hard work and devotion and especially for the fact that the site is 100% free! If people do not like it they can go somewhere else and pay.

Love the new start page! I just wish that there was a quick link from the drop down to get to my Sparkpage. Like when you roll over "start" you can quickly click on your nutrition and fitness trackers without going to the start page first. I seem to get click happy reading everyone's blogs and then have to either go back to the community page or the start page to get back to my Sparkpage to check on other friends. Just a thought. Keep up the amazing work!!!

The new SP start page did take some getting use to as I have a hard time with change. Now I like it. My only negative feed back is the following: First, I have noticed that with the new start page the spin wheel does NOT automatically come up so you could be on the site and forget to log in (which has happened to me before we got the automatic spin pop up with the classic page).

Second, It would more efficient if when we use the Jump to SparkTeam Drop down and just double click on the Team which would get us there. Instead now we have to select the Team and then click go (2 step process instead of 1). I realize this is not specific to the new start page, but it is something that I find annoying.

    Thanks for all you do!!!

Personally, I love the new Start page. I don't find it too 'busy' at all - everything I need to see is right there. It's hard to please everyone, I guess. Perhaps one day we could have a customisable Start page that allows you to add or remove boxes, and drag them around so that the ones that are important to you are at the top of the page?
My favourite part of the Start page is the charts showing my calories in & out vs. goal, and of course weight lost. I can tell at a glance where I'm at and what I need to focus on.

To those of you whining about having to change to the new Start page: grow up. The world changes a little every day, try to focus on the positives of change rather than lingering on the negative. We can't all have what we want, so how about providing some useful feedback instead of just saying you don't want anything to change? Imagine if no website ever updated its look - all the webpages would look as bland as they did in the 1990's and thousands of website designers and programmers would be out of work! Hehehehe

To the people of Sparkpeople - Thanks for all your hard work! It really is appreciated, though you might not know it from all the whining here!

I'm with those who say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The new page is WAY too busy and cluttered for my comfort.

Frankly, I think the goal of most web designers is to inflict ADHD on the entire nation!

Would it really be so very difficult, with all the technology at our disposal, to keep both? And what the heck was wrong with the old one that a whole new look is needed anyway??

I agree with the above comments. I have been going to the Spark Page since December 2009 and found it so helpful. At that time I had just had a heart attack and needed to changed my life style to lose weight and eat healthier food. Your web site helped me through a very difficult time. I have lost the necessary weight and and now lead a healthier life. I could not have done this without the motivation your web site provided along with all the wonderful recipes. It would be much appreciated if you would keep an access route for those of us who choose NOT to have an active facebook account.THANKS AGAIN FOR THE WONDERFUL WORK YOU DO TO HELP PEOPLE!!!!

it would be nice if there were better plugins for social media... for instance being able to have a feed the spark blog into a tumblr or wordpress blog.

For the most part, I like the layout of the new start page. The one item that has prevented me from switching to it is that I can't tell (at a glance) if any of my most recent posts have been updated since my last post.

Thank you for adding the "My Recent Posts" section though. Hopefully you can easily add the user name (and time stamp?) of the last person who had posted to it.

    My reasoning:
As you may know, there is a glitch with the threads that sometimes when you click on a thread, it does not show you the latest activity. You must go to the teams page, and re-click the link to see the latest posts.

If we could see the name/time stamp on our "recent post" section, we would know that it's been updated. Otherwise, we will be adding several extra "clicks" each time we wanted to check a thread.

    Thank you. And nice design!

I've tried the new page, and don't like it. It would be SO nice if the classic page were to remain available; its features are clear, easy to locate, and it's not so *busy* ...I don't want/need an enormous chunk of space devoted to trophies, since it means I lose a clearer idea of the current content of other sections of the site. This new setup loses too much useful information and replaces it with noisy glitz. PLEASE keep the older model as an option.

Ok, fine if you are going to FORCE me to use the new start page I have no choice right? Well I will say that I don't like that when I see my most recent threads I have posted it on it no longer shows who was the last person to post on it. I really hate to WASTE MY TIME looking back at a thread post that no one has replied to since the last time I look.....PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix that.....

I need to go w/ the person who said "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I know we are in some sort of phase, & have been for too many years! where someone is always thinking we have to new & improve something & someone here thinks we need a new start page. Yes, change is hard, more so for some & not others. However, here you had a "Classic" being just right so why spoil a good thing??? It's not broke so why fix it? Thank-you. PS: I trust you will keep an access route for those of us who choose NOT to have an active facebook account. That would be a much appreciated good move...

I actually LIKE the new Start page. :-) I only wish I could move the modules/boxes around to my preference (as you can do on some start pages, such as Yahoo!, etc.)

I now LOOK at the "Today's Features", whereas in the past, I didn't. I like that they're easy to access with the tabs & the brief overview, right there for me to choose if it's something I want to read.

On the Teams page, I have to agree with THREEWHALES above in that the scrolling item at the right is a bit annoying. Maybe put a STOP scroll button there to allow people who wish to stop it, to do so?

What I really hate is the rolling stuff on the right side when you are on a team page. It makes me feel dizzy. I wish there was a way to make that static.

I just recently got back onto Sparkpeople. I like the new start page, but I would like easy access to edit start & end dates for various reports on the front start page. I'd forgotten how to change goal date & ranges for weigh-ins and the like.

Why didn't you just go to modules and let us put things were we need them? There is one column I use on the start page and I get off of the page as quickly as I can and don't go back. The second and third column are totally useless to me and of no interest. Yep pretty standard for redesigned webpages that don't allow customization. Annoyingly useless.

I liked having the featured items on the right hand side. I don't use the community features much at all, so the right hand side is wasted space for me.

having the spinning wheel on the front page, while nice for the first time you load so you spin it, is also wasted space that could be better purposed with content.

what would be really cool is if you had the capability for us to customize our page with what we want to see.

the flash control in the center that flips through the various options to review is in my apparently not so humble opinion distracting and time consuming - i either have to click through, or i have to wait for the flash thing to circle itself around. the classic page was definitely for me a better use of space and technology.
