You know it's going to be a good book...

...when you're already choking up reading the introduction.

Last month I spent my holiday gift card ('cause out of the blue the Supervisors on my shift - not even my DEPARTMENT anymore mind you - gave some of us VISA gift cards) at the book store. Now, that's not unusual in my world (we could probably open a pretty complete bookstore between me and 'Yote without even trying at this point), but this time I decided to go for FITNESS books. Specifically running books - MEZZOANGEL had mentioned one she'd picked up recently, and there were a few I'd had my eye on for a while (like since my halcyon Disney Half-Marathon days of yore). THEN, of course, I ordered myself a new copy of The Spark (because my original copy is on loan and dammit I want to read it again, and HEY it's a new edition, so I need the NEW one right?). And THEN another spark friend mentioned a book I decided I HAD to check out, so I ordered it when I was ordering Lukey's birthday present (because Amazon.com is my best friend). And look, it had a companion work out book I got for $4 (that I saw the next day at Half Price books for $14 - SCORE!).

Here's the stash:

So having finished my mindless-paranormal-fluff-of-t
he-month yesterday (the first of the "Breed" novels by Lora Leigh...great sexy brain candy), I looked at the stack and decided "Okay, enough waiting for the knowledge to magically enter my brain just 'cause I bought these, time to actually READ one already," and pondered where to start.

I picked up Slow Fat Triathlete, and was choking up before I'd gotten through 2 pages.

Here's an excerpt:

You know what?
I'm a beginner.
And we were ALL beginners at whatever is important to us at some point. And hopefully we'll be beginners at SOMETHING for the rest of our lives, because life is an adventure!
SEIZE THE DAY!

Yeah, I'm going to like this book.

Meanwhile, it's time to stop playing around on the interwebz and get my slow fat ass on a treadmill already.
E25K here I come!

I loved the Slow Fat Triathlete book! She's very good. :-) Have you read Ultra-Marathon Man by Dean Karnazes? I sob like a baby at the end.

Yay! You bought the Slow, Fat Triathlete!! SUCH a good inspirational book! I read it and completed a triathlon at around 220 pounds. My goal was to not be last, and I was not last! (OK, I was next to last, and when I crossed the finish line they announced that I WAS last, but I yelled "No, I'm not last!!" haha) I will repeat my favorite mantra I learned from her "I am awesome, I kick ass, I stay focused on my task!" I seriously was chanting that out loud during the bike part. I hope you like the rest of the book as much as I did. So glad I was able to recommend it, and that now all these people you posted this for will be inspired to read it as well.

Cool books. Thanks for sharing. I bought both the hardcover and paperback Spark too. I figure it's a way to say thanks for this site.
I also read Running for Mortals. It's pretty good. I have not read many fitness books, but I am slowly changing that.

Oh wow. That is totally inspiring. It really speaks to a lot of my insecurities about participating in a sporting competition. I have that stupid mental block that says I'm not "supposed to" participate because I'm an out of shape lump.

That's it. I'm going to order that book and start my low-level training for a triathlon. Why the hell not?

Okay, I just may have to get that book, based on that excerpt.

And I love the concept that we were all beginners at some point-has anyone else ever felt harshly judged when starting a new job, and at least one person makes you feel completely stupid for not knowing everything the first day?

And I REALLY love that we should be a beginner at something for the rest of our lives, because when we stop learning, we start dying.

    Spark on, sister!

That's such a good point to remember. We have all been beginners, and will continue to be on some things, but if we keep trying and plugging along we will gain experience.
