20 miles - couldnt be prouder.

Sunday, January 16, 2011

Today was the big kahuna before the marathon (on superbowl sunday). 20 miles. Rumor has it that if you can run 20, you can do a marathon. So, that was todays challenge.

I woke up this morning and my IT band ( i think) on my left leg wasnt just sore, it was HURTING. But, I just could NOT cancel my run! I went on the run a little later after walking around trying to loosen it up and stretch. I know it was from yoga because I remember doing a stretch and it REALLY being sore DURING yoga. Anyway, I drive to my aunts house to park the car and set off for the beach. I had my fuel belt with all my fuel, and set off. Well, I was already sore on my outer thigh (it band area) by mile 2. But I kept at it. It was a beyond beautiful day out, a TON of surfers, and the general public riding bikes, skating, running, walking etc. I hit a MAJOR wall at mile 10. I was ready to call my aunt, I was hurting, and felt like I was going to throw up! But I knew that if I quit and called her 1. I wouldnt be able to do a marathon with confidence and 2. I'd be SO disappointed in myself for throwing in the towel. So, I did a run walk combo. And I MADE IT!
My Nike + told me my average pace was 13:44, and considering I was hurtin, and stopped for water and when I refueled, I am very proud. I definitely feel like I can do the marathon in under 6 hours (my ONLY goal).
After the 20 miles, I hung out with my aunt to calm down. Had some seltzer water and then finally relaxed. I was already feeling stiff (within minutes) so instead of her having to heat her spa, instead I left her place and went to my gym to sit in the spa. I couldnt get myself to eat lunch (only had breakfast and fuel) because seriously my stomach wasnt hungry.
Anyway, I go to the gym and change into my bathing suit (BIKINI!) and felt confident in it. Seriously, I cant tell you what a feeling that was for me. I had my towel wrapped around me and then took it off to get into the spa, and for once I didnt feel like I had to hide and make a beeline for the water. Sat in there for 10-15 minutes (all I could handle) and then showered.
Now, I am home and finally am HUNGRY!!
I am so proud of myself for my day. I'm still scared about the marathon (which I think is a good thing) but today proved that I can do it. Even if I have to walk some of it. The nike said I burned 2200 calories today! Woo.

Hope you all are doing fantastic, and remember, if you ever need anything, I'm always here.

Thank you for being my biggest cheerleaders.
