Negative Split Run Brings New Goals

I had a wonderful run today. I'm realizing more & more that I get stronger as a run goes on. Anyway, it was 44 degrees and drizzling when I went out to run at 7:45 this morning. I had a great run and some pretty strong negative spilts.

Here are my times:
mile 1 - 14:37
mile 2 - 13:41
mile 3 - 13:41 (mile 2 & 3 were together - forgot to hit 'lap')
mile 4 - 12:46
mile 5 - 12:53 (my ankle hurt for a minute or so & I walked)
mile 6 - 12:06
mile 6.5 - 5:54 (11:45 pace)

So, as I get past a few miles, and closer to the finish, I can run faster! And, I do! This cements the fact that I'd been discussing with others last week. I WILL start running a mile warmup run before any 5K competitions. As far as 10Ks, I will walk/run at least .5 miles. As far as Half Marathons, I'll probably just walk a little & use the first miles as warmups.

This also made me realize I can and will run my 10K - not walk/run. I switched to walk/run in mid-October, but I've been wanting to run more. So, I know this is doable. I ran 10K today!

Also, I hit 6.2 (so a 10K) at 1:22:09. My goal for my first ever 10K on February 26th was 1:20. Well, I can obviously beat that! My goal is now 1:15. I know that is a minute off per mile, but that is 6 weeks away AND I wasn't 'racing' today. I'm excited! And, if I can't do it, I can't do it! But that's my "A" goal.

That also has me dreaming of new goals for my next Half Marathon. But, I'll just have to see where my training takes me over the next few months.

    Great blog!! I learned a few things! Now if I can only master my Garmin! (I'm so challenged) I love how you adjusted your goal time for the 10k in February! I have no doubt that you will achieve your goal! Congrats also on your first HM! How awesome!

    My run today was a little colder than yours, but I also proved something to myself - I can run 10 miles non-stop;-)
    I don't do the run/walk thing but every long run so far I have either had to stop to use the washroom, stop for red lights, walk to do the GU and water or walk a miserable hill. Today, I ran the whole way and did 10.44 miles in 2:02:45!

    Oh, you're going to have no trouble reaching your 1:20 goal for your 10K!!
    I've been working on doing negative splits, but so far I think I'm more of a "steady she goes" kinda runner. I always tend to pick it up a bit after the first mile or so, once I'm warmed up. But after that, my pace pretty much stays the same until the final sprint - if I have enough juice left in me, that is!

    I guess I need to google negative splits. I've heard the term before but not quite sure what it is. I can deduce by your blog that you start off at a slower pace and increase each mile? I just purchased a garmin forerunner online. I can't wait to get it so I can try it during my runs. I have plans to run my first 10K this year too but also a half in October. Sounds like you're doing great!
