1st Competitive Swim Class Lesson... and a Question

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Well, I did it! I completed my first "adult competitive swim class." (What a mouthful!) And, I survived!

Here's the funny part... I'm the only student in the class! And, the coach is my friend. It's actually kind of a nice set up.

Here's pretty much what we did:
emoticon 100 yards of freestyle with fins
emoticon 100 yards of kicking with fins
emoticon 50 yards of freestyle with face out of water looking forward which I can use to see where I'm going while competing
emoticon worked on side stroke, which I can use if I need to keep my face out of water
emoticon worked on elementary backstroke which I can also use if I need a breather
emoticon worked on breaststroke arms & legs separately (and I'm HORRIBLE at this, but I really want to learn it!)
emoticonworked on flip turns, which I can use while doing workouts to swim continuously and build stamina

The class is only 30 minutes and quite a lot of it was instruction so I didn't really work out too hard. I actually ran this morning, too, so it was probably good that we didn't swim a whole lot of laps. I'm sure that'll change, though!

emoticonSo, here's my questions... as you are working out, what percentage of the time do you use fins? I'm also wondering about the pros & cons of using the fins. I'd love some of your thoughts if you are a swimmer! Thanks!

I wish I could help you, but I can't. I used to be friends with swimmers and they said that fins make them go faster. You probably already knew that.

Great blog. Keep up the hard work. You amaze me with everything you keep accomplishing. emoticon

This blog made me jealous, I miss swimming! I used to swim a lot in my early teens, but school got in the way and I never went back. I keep hoping I'm going to get back into it soon!!
