I am learning about Hope and I am reading through the Bible on my own. I am currently in 1 Samuel 11. This is where the people of Israel ask Samuel to appoint a king for them. The Lord gives the people what they want and appoints Saul as king and Samuel performs the ceremony.
While I am reading this, I am wondering how it must have broken the heart of God for the people of Israel to want to follow a flawed human in a kingship position rather than to follow the God of the Universe.
After all that God had done for these people...after all of the miracles their ancestors and even they have witnesses...and yet it still was not enough for these people (or for us today really; our ancestors built and fought for a christian nation and look at what we live in today; a sinful national)
We today are looking to the government to solve our problems more and more than turning to God for answers.
I think about how many times I wish I could just sit down at the table with God over a cup of coffee and have a good ol' conversation with him. I want to ask him questions like. What is it in my life that you would like to see change next. What are these plans that you have for me? What were you thinking when you made men and then put women under them? Why don't bees look like little flying pegasus? Why didn't you make ants cute?
You know important stuff like that...
But here the Israel people had God the Father at the head of their country / people and they wanted to be like "everyone else" and have a human leader that they could go to and see and touch. It is amazing that we some how don't grasp why teenages want to follow the crowd, adults do it too.
I have been seeing a lot on TV recently about anorexia and the impact that the modeling industry has on young girls and they did a story last night on Entertainment tonight about an actress that lost 20 pound to play the part of a Ballerina in a movie called the Black Swan and how the dieting industry is jumping on that bandwagon and saying "Follow Natalie Portman's Diet and you too can lose 20 pounds and when you see the film footage she is a skeleton frame.
I hope that we here on SparkPeople are not going beyond what we should be...
When we see someone who has a thin body or a nice size or a healthy size I hope that we are not continuing to encourage them to lose but shift our focus on to maintenance. I hope that with all the vast numbers of people on this website there are no people who are experiencing a warped body image, but if they are on here I hope that they will find help through SparkPeople to realize that the size of our bodies is not the issue (or at least should not be the issue) Our HEALTH is the issue and a healthy body size is what we should be after for healthful reasons. If it is about the size of pants we ware then we are in the wrong mindset.
Our minds should be on health not size.
The Israelites minds were on the image that the other countries projected. They had men to follow. They saw the countries that surrounded them as being able to go to a person and it was concrete to them. But what they failed to see in their warped image was that the human kings that they were envying were flawed terribly and were weak and greedy and were striving to achieve their own selfish goals.
The God that they followed was there because he chose them and because he loved them and was trying to teach them right from wrong not use them and manipulate them like the human kings.
I want to put God in the driver's seat. I made all these plans for myself but I did not make them prayerfully. I just saw all that was going on around me and the progress that everyone else was making and I wanted what they had a size 8 jean...
But I am going to pray about what God wants for me...I came across this verse in the footnotes of my passage this morning and I love that God is who he is and that he cares as much as he does. This verse shows just how much he cares.
"'For I know the plans I have for you;' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" (NIV: Women of Faith Study Bible)
There's that word again 'HOPE' and I am learning to hope for things not seen...God took the time to make plans for me...it is time that I take the time to find our what those plans are so I can walk with God through my life...
Have a great day all!
