Brussel sprouts

Monday, December 20, 2010

I basically LOVE all vegetables, but Brussel sprouts are the ONE that I would name if I hated one. I think I've only had them boiled, and when you bit into one, a bitter "juice" squirted out that just was so not tasty (hence, "nasty") to me, I couldn't believe anyone would eat them.

Then a friend of mine recently served them split in half and roasted - wow! I couldn't believe they could actually taste GOOD! So last weekend I very hesitantly bought a small bag of frozen Brussel sprouts (on sale, with a coupon - just in case I had to throw them out). Well! DH & I were both pleasantly surprised that they tasted good! We love cabbage, and that's pretty much what they tasted like.

So thank goodness, I can now say that there is NO vegetable that I do not like! emoticon

The exact same thing happened to me- loved all veggies BUT those little nasty things- until I got them roasted!

Cutting them in half makes all the difference. Releases a gas that makes for the unpleasant flavor.

Sandy - I so love brussel sprouts! They're my favourite vegetable. In the UK we can buy them still attached to their stalk which means they're really fresh when you pull them off and cook them. I boil them in water until they are just soft - in fact still with a little bit of "bite". My boys grew up loving them because I told them they were baby cabbages. It's a tradition here to have them with the Christmas dinner but I eat lots through the winter.

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
