A Work In Progress

Friday, December 03, 2010

I am a work in progress. The beautiful thing about being a work in progress is that you don't have to be perfect yet. You can step back once in a while, look at your progress, and make changes. There isn't any deadline when you have to stop working and turn yourself in for approval.

I can look at my canvas and sketch in things that I need - better eating habits. More sleep. Consistent exercise. The more I practice each one, going over and over it with my pencil, the darker and more solid the lines become on my picture.

I can use my eraser to remove the things that I don't need in my life - junk food habits. Staying up too late. Laziness. Discouragement. Frustration. It's not always going to be easy. The longer I've been practicing these bad habits, the darker and thicker their lines are on my canvas. Sometimes you can't erase these things all at once. You have to go over and over it with the eraser, taking them out of the picture little by little. You have to make the new lines bright so they stand out and draw your focus, so you have less time to spend wishing for the old lines that don't belong there any more.

Sometimes you realize that your canvas has been standing in the corner, gathering dust. It's never too late to brush it off and pull out your pencils again.
