This is a summary of my journey so far as I enter my 4th week on Spark People. It is mostly intended for my own reference, as I'm afraid it will be terribly boring for anyone else to read.

The first couple days of my new diet, I found it difficult to stay in range in all areas - I was going over in carbs and calories, and under in fats and proteins. I got to dinner and didn't have many calories available so I was hungry in the evenings. It's been fun planning meals differently, thinking of healthier foods, which end up leaving me less hungry in the end. It is still hardest to get enough protein - some days I do fine and other days I don't get enough. But it's easy now to get the right amount of calories and carbs.

As I started the diet, I was surprised and even a little worried about how fast I had started to lose weight. In the first three weeks I lost 7.5 pounds. I gained a little of it back and am now 6.5 pounds down from my starting weight, but my pants are a lot looser! The first two weeks I was exercising a lot more than I used to, almost every day. Maybe this gave my metabolism a kick start and that's why I lost a lot quickly. I let up a little on my exercise but am still getting a healthy amount.

I know I am not supposed to weigh myself every day, but for the moment, I just can't help it! It is very motivating to see the number go down, and when it doesn't, I am not too discouraged because I can still see and feel a difference in my body. I weighed my lowest on Saturday, and have gained a tiny bit each day since then, but I know I am still doing pretty well. Yesterday, for example, I taught PE at a high school and definitely overdid it lifting weights, throwing medicine balls, and doing other exercises I am not used to at all! Does the body retain water after a tough work-out like that?

I have a friend in another city who is doing the Spark Diet with me and we encourage each other and talk about what we've been doing which is a great motivator. I am excited to see how the next few weeks go :)
