Water

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

2 dl of water before a meal will make you eat 100 cal less. This is according to a study in US. Yhe people who had 2 dl (close to a cup) of water before their meal lost two kilos in three months.

The study featured 48 adults between the ages of 55 and 75 over a 12-week period.
Half of the group were on a low-calorie diet and also drank two dl of water prior to each meal, while the other 24 had the same diet and got water as well, but weren't told specifically when to drink it. When the weeks were over, people in the first group had lost an average of about seven kg , as opposed to the average of five kilos people in the second group shed. In addition, a year after the study, those who drank the water prior to the meals were doing a better job keeping the weight off.

Of course their weight loss was due to eating less, but since both groups had the same diet, the group drinking water lost more. The theory is that drinking water first makes you better prepared to eat a little less.

The results could also be age-specific. As you age, the digestive process slows down, meaning you feel full longer the older you are. But, as Brenda Davy, one of the study's researchers, notes, drinking more water could still help in dieting, no matter what your age. That's because it can increase metabolism, thus helping to burn more calories, or it can act as a replacement for other drinks that have calories.

My mom was really into something. Every time I was hungry before diner time, she used to tell me to drink a glass of water so I could wait when she was preparing our meal.
I still drink water before eating.

Thank you for two things. Firstly, this blog. I drink a lot of water, but find I drink it mostly about an hour after my meals, so I am now going to begin making sure I drink before meals, just to see if I do eat less. I always used to drink before eating, but somehow my timing changed. That will begin before dinner tonight.

The second thing I want to thank you for is the message you left about using a choke chain on Ned, my pup. It was all the encouragement I needed to train him without the choke chain. He is an intelligent pup, now 6 months old, and he is very eager to please me by doing the right thing when shown what the right thing is. I don't have to raise my voice, he can tell if he has done something wrong by the expression on my face, and if he sees my smile disappear, his head and tail drop and he walks from the room.

Ned and I will walk together and enjoy every moment of it. There will be no choke chain, just lots of love and encouragement. Training can be fun, and we can both enjoy it. I wouldn't like to have a chain pulling tight round my neck just because I was so excited and happy to be doing something new, so I won't use a choke chain on Ned.

Thank you for making me see the better alternative.

    Hugs,
    Chris.

You got it. Members of our team have been seeing challenges to drink 2 cups of water before each meal. It fills you up, hydrates you and you feel full faster!

Thanks for sharing the scientific facts behind my madness...lol

Telling people to drink water has been my answer to everything for many years. But I had never heard that one, too late for tonight, but I'll start trying it tomorrow.

A lot of excessive eating is really because of dehydration.

Also, drinking before meals increases the metabolism, and sets up the release of bile so your digestive system works normally. So, when you drink water before meals your digestive system is 'primed' so to speak to do it's work.

I have noticed myself that when I drink water before meals my weight loss comes along nicely, and when I am busy and thus don't drink enough, that is also when I destroy my diet.

I am a firm believer that drinking enough water - especially before meals - is a really great asset to taking off weight.
