Hurricane Igor heading to Bermuda

Sunday, September 19, 2010

So it seems our luck has run out this hurricane season - Bermuda has had the threat of several storms this year which have turned out to be nothing, but now Hurricane Igor has decided he wants to pay a visit. Just the name bothers me - makes me think of a monster and a monster storm it is turning into. It is 500 miles across and packing winds of up to 100kts but thankfully it is weakening - we were expecting a category 3 strike but now it is a category 1 - I just hope and pray it weakens some more before it hits us.

The winds started picking up yesterday and below are pictures of our south shore beaches yesterday afternoon - the surf was already high then.

We are feeling the effects of it now - heavy rain and winds gusting to over 50 knots. The house is closed up and we are bunkered down preparing for the worst - the tub and pots are full of water, the ac's are out of the windows, the books and flashlights are ready for when the power goes out, which it inevitably will.

Oh boy, as I just wrote that last sentence there was a huge bang outside - it was the electricity pole outside my neighbours house - so their power is now out - not good news as I am heading down there this afternoon as their place is more protected than mine. We are in for a hot sweaty night then I guess, listening to the winds howling around us. Let's hope that losing power is the worst we have to experience.

Think of us at this time please, my spark friends. I will post again as soon as I can after the storm and hopefully I can say we are all safe and there is no damage, god willing.

I'm saying my prayers that you don't get hit hard by the hurricane. Keep us posted when you can.
