Bike rack vs my face...bike rack won

Wednesday, September 08, 2010

This past weekend hubby and I took off and went camping down at Land Between the lakes with my mom, niece Nikki and nephew Taylor. We all took our bikes to ride on the trails.

We couldn't have asked for a more perfect weekend to camp. No need for A/C or heater. It was perfect weather.

Friday after we got camp set up we just hung out around the campsite waiting for my family to arrive. My mom likes to take what she thinks are shortcuts. They were about an 1hr later than they thought arriving. Seems things have changed since the last time she was camping at LBL....10 yrs or more.

Hubby did all the cooking. He likes to cook in the cast iron dutch oven. Works for me. Friday night he fixed beef stroganoff and I fixed a salad. We spent the rest of the night sitting around the campfire.

Saturday moring we went to the 1850's homeplace for storytelling and county fair day. They had professional and some not so professional storytellers sharing old tyme stories. Hubby and Taylor played Roly Oly which is a marble game kids played in the era. We made pinch pots out of earth clay.

We had a picnic for lunch and then stop to view the bison across from the homeplace. We stop by the grocery store on the way back to the campsite. Were unloading the trunk which is when the accident happened. I had forgotten the bike rack was still on the back of the car. I'm talking to my niece as I shut the trunk lid. BAMM!! My glasses are knocked off. I'm knocked to the ground. I grabbed my face yelling because the darn bike rack whacked me across the bridge of the nose. I'm thinking my nose is broke. Bloods going to come gushing out any minute. Thankfully no broken nose. No bloody nose. Just one sore nose/face. Moral of that story...grab the arms on the bike rack next time I shut the trunk. I had to take a nap after that fiasco. Hubby fixed Cocoa crusted pork tenderloin with wild rice for dinner. They all raved about that one. Couldn't believe I got the recipe off Spark People. After we got the dishes washed and the campstire picked up we played rummy.

Sunday morning was pretty much a lay around day. Nothing exciting happened. I didn't whack my face again. We took a bike ride around the campground. Mom and I drove to the store to get ingredients for Hobo pockets. I missed our turn and we went 40 minutes out of our way trying to find a Wal-mart. Around sunset we drove to the Elk & Bison prairie. The 1st time around the loop we saw bison but no elk. On our 2nd time around hubby says the 1st one to spot Elk gets a $$. He no more said that when nikki spotted 5 cows. A few minutes later we heard the bull bugle for his harem and low and behold an Elk with a massive rack walks across the road. Nikki was so excited. She had never been to the prairie before.

Monday after breakfast and took off for a bike ride. I can tell my niece and nephew do not get much exercise. They both were whining about riding. Taylor is getting into it after we get on the trails thru the woods. Nikki wants no part of it. We take a wrong turn and end up going down a massive hill. Course what goes down a hill must come up a hill. I had to walk in several places myself. We get about 30 minutes into our ride, 4 miles on the main road from the campground and the derailer on Nikki's bike looses the c-clip. The chain comes off. No more bike riding. We call my mom to come get us. We get back to camp, eat lunch, break camp and head back to IN. They head back to TN. Mini vacation is over.

Today nose is still sore but I survived. Next camp trip planned is in Oct. I hope to go before then but depends on hubby's crazy work schedule.
