Cardiac Rehab Update

Monday, July 05, 2010

I have to tell you all about my latest achievement. I was at cardiac rehab last Friday and I was on an elliptical machine called the Arc Trainer. We are supposed to be exercising at 3 - 6 METS (a measure of cardiac work). I have been working at 7 - 8.5 METS for a couple of weeks now. The trainers say I am at the "vigorous" end of the scale. I felt really good on the machine and wasn't breathing hard and my chest wasn't pounding. I decided to close my eyes and there was fast music playing on my mp3 player and I started to go faster and faster. I still wasn't breathing hard and when I opened my eyes, I was doing 10.75 METS! I felt really great, like I could jump off that machine and just run forever and not get tired. It was a great feeling, it felt better than.... well maybe not that good, but close.

I bought my own treadmill because it has been too hot and/or rainy here to go outside and exercise. My treadmill has the iFit system built in so I can plug in a SD memory card that has pre-programmed workouts on it. The treadmill then "talks" to you and takes you through your workout. My treadmill has been named Rhonda because that is the name of the trainer on the SD card. We have a love/hate relationship going. I could have gotten a program with Jillian's voice but don't think I could have taken that for long.

I go back to work next week. I miss my co-workers but I kind of like going to bed and waking up when I want to. It might be tough for me to get back into a routine. I also have 6 more weeks of rehab to go. I'm going to miss it when I'm done. Then I'm totally on my own and have to find a gym to get my own workouts in. I plan on making this a lifelong habit.
