Learning to Run! Without Pain!

So, last week I did Week 1 of C25K and my calfs were KILLING me every timeI ran. I bought some new shoes at Fleet Feet this weekend and thought that would solve my problem. It didn't! I was re-doing W1 so a friend could join me and, at about my 4th of 8th runs, I started thinking "I HATE running!" It just felt so painful, but just in my calves.

During my 5th run, a lady ran past me. I was barely shuffling along breathing easily... she was kicking her feet back towards her bottom. Hmmm.... maybe I should give that a try? So, I sped up a little and started kicking more. IT WORKED!!! NO PAIN!!!

I ran 3 more times with the same result... NO PAIN! But, boy was I huffing & puffing. emoticon

I'm a little disappointed that my new running buddy can't join me at all this week. I knew she couldn't today, but her plans changed. Then, next week I can't do it with her. So, I'm not sure when we'll actually run together! Right now, I'm trying to decide if I should go on to week 2 or stick with week 1 on Wednesday.

Anyway, I'm pleased to have completed my fourth day of "running!" emoticon

    It'll get better. It took me a few weeks for my calves to adjust and not hurt when I did the walking portion of C25K. But I adjusted and it worked out great!

    Way to go!!! And that right there is what runners mean when they say that each person needs to find their running form! It is different for everyone. If you get a chance, watch a race where elites are attending and you will notice that they all run different, and some of them you may even think to yourself WOW they are doing it all wrong! LOL But it works for them!

    Isn't great when you hit your stride? I love your perseverance with your C5K. I did a C5K twice. My first didn't run after at all!! This second time I am. I feels great!! You keep up the great work!! You will feel great when you run your first 5K. emoticon

    Yes, make sure you are stretching ... DD7 told me today that she likes the stretching part of our runs the best lol! I'm so glad you found a way to keep your calves from hurting =D There are soooo many techniques out there and a different one works for different people - its all about finding out what works for you! (I always hated hearing that answer to something lol and here I am telling it to someone else!)

    As for what to do ... it really all depends on how you feel whether you should move on or stay where you are. Personally, don't make plans on whether your friend will be joining you later - continue as if she isn't. *IF* she does, then you can back down to where she is if she hasn't been running on her own this whole time or she might have been running in anticipation that you will have been running and will be up to speed with you. Who knows which way it will go.

    Alrighty, I just got in from my parent's so I'm tired and blabbering ... I'm waiting on my DS9 to fall asleep so I can use a needle on his splinter. He told me to wait til he was asleep and then I could do whatever I wanted as long as it didn't wake him!!

    Keep running and you will keep shaping up. Be sure to stretch after running and to cool down which will help those calfs as well. emoticon
